Why England Don’t Develop Managers

Why do you think this is? 🤔

The English Premier League has just two english managers while La Liga, the german Bundesliga and Serie A have 50% or more managers from the league’s nation. It is quite interesting to think why the best soccer league in the world isn’t producing managers.

Another reason is how getting coaching badges and training costs a ton more in England than in Europe. This leads to fewer coaches compared to other countries and fewer opportunities.

That's why they hired Thomas Tuchel as England's manager.

I think language barrier is big as well - Many people from around the world speak English, so prem teams will get managers from anywhere - Less so with Spanish or Italian. Even in the Spanish league even most of the non Spanish managers are from Spanish speaking countries. It’s important the manager can speak the local language for press and also because most of the players will be from that country.

There are currently as many English managers in Ligue 1 🇫🇷 as their are in the prem

Italian coaching is insane this year. Baroni, Inzaghi, Italiano, Conte, Palladino, etc. they all leveled up their clubs in Serie A, but also abroad in big clubs, like Ancelotti at real, Maresca at chelsea and De Zerbi at Marseille. This is really impressive.

They are tactically inept, arrogant and unwilling to learn. Hence their abysmal performance whenever they have the chance. Gerrard nearly sent Aston Villa to the championship before Unai Emery took over. Frank Lampard nearly sent my darling Chelsea into exile on two occasions, Tuchel came in and won the UCL with the same squad. Gareth Southgate had a good squad to win major trophies for the National team, but his tactical ineptitude made the team look less than what they are.

It's not the lack of opportunities, it is what they do with the opportunity when it arrives. The only good one out there is Eddie Howe.

It's a fundamental issue that must be addressed.

The cost of coaching badges is a major barrier for English managers.
It costs so much more for the coaching courses than other countries

3 Danish coaches in the Bundesliga is actually quite good

The ending got me laughing hard with Rooney’s face and the 7-0 score line

A Spanish manager brings the Spanish football to the club. Same with a German manager, the rock and roll high intensity football. When an English manager comes, what do you get? What is England's footballing identity? That's a huge reason as to why, no USP so less tactical development. English coaches become copies of foreign coaches.

It's not a surprise at all. I can't even think of a good English menager. But I can from all the other big leagues:
Spain: Del Bosque, Guardiola, Emery, Benitez
Italy: Ancelotti, Trappatoni, Conte, Capello, Mancini
Germany: Loew, Flick, Nagelsmann, Klinsmann, Klopp, Tuchel, Rehhagel, Hitzfeld, Heynckes
Portugal: Mourinho, Villas-Boas, Jorge Jesus, Bento
France: Zidane, Deschamps, Blanc, Domenech, Wenger
Netherlands: Van Gaal, De Boer, Koeman, Hiddink, Rijkaard, Advocaat

It trickles down to footballers as well. Look at the number of established English players plying their trades in foreign leagues. Not a lot.

It costs an arm and a leg to get your coaching badges in England, Spain, Italy and Germany all have very affordable prices to encourage people to try and coach/manage but in England it costs thousands of pounds and you’re not even sure if you’ll actually get your badges due to many factors

Wayne Rooney didn't actually lose 7-0 but it was the manager before

Its also worth noting that the second divison in england is a very high standard so you get a lot of english managers in that league who make good money and are able to get jobs abroad or in the premier league off the back of working in it
