Connecting Two Air Lines Using a Compression Fitting

Let me show you how I connected these two airlines with a compression fitting.
The tubing, the fitting, and the tools I needed all came in a kit from Rapid Air.
First, I used their cutters to make a clean cut on the ends of both lines.
Next, I tapered the ends with their bevel tool- making three full turns.
This tubing is aluminum with a polyethylene inner and outer layer.
I put the nut and split ring on the tubing– pouring soapy water onto the fitting made it easier to push into place; then I slid the split ring up and hand tightened the nut.
The directions said to draw a line across the fitting and the nut- this way you can keep track of how much you tighten, they want a minimum of a ¾ turn.
You can see I’m within a ¼ turn of being lined back up.
More soapy water on the other end of the fitting; then I repeat the whole process again.

Pro-tip: use silicone paste/lubricant on the o-rings (same thing they use for brake caliper slide pins), will greatly extend their life, and make it really easy to insert

Just to mention, it makes fitting seals brittle over time when exposed to soap water with installation, I used to do LP gas installations, and I learned the hard way.

I ran this type of airline though out my shop, it works excellent! When running shop lines they make outlets and junction fittings to make it very easy. 👍

This air line is great for overheads, underground and behind walls. BUT, it is a bear to straighten out and/or run on walls. Plus, its expensive, especially the fittings and termination blocks. Good old copper still the best choice for mounting on walls and nice, straight lines.

I'd probably spend $40 and make the fitting accessable with a meter box to reduce corrosion, and make it way easier to change if it ever does fail.
I work on trucks, machinery, and trailers with air brakes. Compression fittings are _by_ _far_ the most common point of failure.

We do a similar thing but with sprinkler systems but the tubing is all polyethylene
