He was already a Buddhist when he attacked Kalinga. In the 4th year of his rule he had embraced Budh's teachings.

Ashoka was Buddhists before the battle of Kalinga. Ashoka would invade Kalinga in 262 BC whereas we know from minor rock edicts that Ashoka had converted to Buddhism more than two years earlier. No Buddhist text links his conversion to the war and even Ashoka's eulogists like Charles Allen agree that his conversion predated the Kalinga war.

great information. Love from Sri lanka. I've learned a lot about Ashoka Emperor at school. the main reason why we have buddhism in sri lanka is because of him. We respect him as if he was a king of our country.

whereas we know from minor rock edicts that Ashoka had converted to Buddhism more than two years earlier. No Buddhist text links his conversion to the war and even Ashoka’s eulogists like Charles Allen agree that his conversion predated the Kalinga war. Moreover, he seems to have had links with Buddhists for a decade before his conversion. The evidence suggests that his conversion to Buddhism was more to do with the politics of succession than with any regret he felt for sufferings of war. Source -TOI

@Rajesh Pillai Ashok attacked Kaling 264 BC. He was a Budhist 4yrs before carrying out attack on Kaling. Jainism & Ajeevikaon sect also had influence in the area. King of Kaling refused to give taxes to Ashok. This infuriated Ashok. Buddhists had turned violent against other faiths. Ashok attacked Kaling. In the attack killed 1lkh people & injured same No of people & took 1.5 lk as dasas. Never ever in the history of Bharat, people were taken as slaves. He got 18000 Ajeevikaon killed for practicing different faith. After his death Kaling King Kharveer attacked Pataliputra & took away whatever Ashoka had looted.
