Ashok was converted to Buddhism 4 years before the date of Kalinga War in 261 BCE.The land of Kalinga was a secular land for all Dharmic religions including Vedic, Jainism, Buddhism, Ajivika and also local cults of present day Odisha.The Buddhist Sangha had propagated Ashoka to attack Kalinga.If won Ashoka will get a rich region and will open a door to have monopoly trade in Kalinga Sagar(Present bay of Bengal).With this the Budhhist Sangha deemed to make Kalinga a Buddhist land only and to establish supremacy of Buddhism.But for all reason the bravery of Kalinga people reached its zenith to oppose Ashoka.Ashoka was not a conquerer but also a reason for the fall of Maurya Empire.
