Ashoka the Great, probably the one Indian king we all have studied in schools, How great he was, How he planted trees, How he converted to Buddhism after witnessing the cruelty of Kalinga war.
What if I tell you it’s all A BIG LIE?

The evidence Ashoka’s own inscriptions tell a completely different story. I think it’s time to dig out the facts and counter the lies we have been told for generations.

The story we have been told is Ashoka the great Emperor invaded a tiny kingdom Kalinga. But the people of Kalinga were not ready to surrender either. So the Kalinga war happened which resulted in the death of 1,00,000 people which is a huge number of population 2000 years back. So Ashoka felt really guilty and converted to Buddhism and practiced nonviolence for the rest of his life.

This is the story we have been told for years.
This is the story which is still being taught in schools.
We even have movies based on the story.

But how far it is TRUE?

It’s high time we uncover the actual story of Ashoka based on the inscriptions and evidence we have instead of making a fake story.

I am a Theravada Buddhist from Sri Lanka.
According to Sri Lankan books, he became a Buddhist after the Kalinga War.
He propagated Buddhism, so he was called Dharmashoka.
Ashoka
Chandashoka
Dharmashoka ....
It is mentioned in the books that Ashoka did not wars after becoming a Buddhist.
I'm not saying I'm 100% right. ..
I have little knowledge of Indian historical sources.
Which Indian source mentions that Ashoka fought wars after the Kalinga

Mahindra Thero, the son of Emperor Ashoka, brought Buddhism to our country.
In ancient times, the people of Sri Lanka called India as Jambudhveepa.
According to our books, Emperor Ashoka built 84000 Buddhist temples all over Jambudhveepa.

Buddhism was given to many Buddhist countries in the world
Emperor Ashoka.
He is a hero to Theravada Buddhists.

I'm a Buddhist nun from Srilanka and our great historical chronical Mahavamsa has a several chapters dedicated to Ashoka. And I believe most of the historical facts the world know by now are either taken from Ashokan rock edicts or from Mahavamsa. If there are other sources I think you should better mention them in your narrative. It is true that a king has always limitaitons in following parama ahinsa and an emperor is even less capable. However Ashoka contributed a lot for Buddhism by holding the third sangha council since Lord Buddha's passing away and it is as a result of that council that he sent missionaries to seven areas including Srilanka. By this time both his son and daughter had enetered the order pf sangha and Srilanka received both of them, first Maha Mahinda thero his son, along with Buddhism and then hos daughter Sanghamiththa theri with a sapling of the Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained Buddhahood.

The countries which received Buddhism from Ashoka still remains Buddhist to this day so unlike the empire of Alexander the great which collapsed soon after his demise the dharma empire of Ashoka the great still remains well intact today. Making him quite close to a chakravarti raja mentioned in Buddhism. (But not completely).

P. S - it's better if you include references to your information under the video description.

Hello ..I'm a srilankan and as you all know buddhism is the religion of majority here. Buddist monk called "Mahinda" The son of Ashoka the great came here and established buddhism as a result of 3rd 'dharma sangayana' which was conducted by king Ashoka. And dear Keerthi I think it's not that much fair to judge a great king by some information you collected from various types of resources. There could be so much untold, unwritten stories in history that you probably can't explain in a couple of minute youtube video. It's almost been 2000 years do you think people who had been lived through all those years didn't notice a single thing you say? Don't know whether stories we've been told true or a lie but forever greatfull for bringing buddhism here for the sake of politics or with the thought of spreading buddhism.

ps. Be aware before beliving everything that random youtube historians say. This video is filled with lack of information and biased (why I say it's biased ; I've seen hefty amount of people's hate towards king Ashoka for the fact that he converted in to a buddhist. And most of them are hindu people. Can't help with that. Can't change history.Pleas don't hate someone just because they don't belong to the same religion as yours.) I'm amazed of amount of people that compliment these kind of videos without any kind of research . Hope people will do more quality contents.

I don't understand why you all YouTuber historians don't put your facts sources in the description?? It is always good practice to mention the references.

In the book Ashoka Vadan, Emperor Ashoka has been described as very cruel because by showing him cruelty, he wanted to prove that he was initially angry and later became a Buddhist. He gave up his anger. If you want to know the true history of Emperor Ashoka, then Know them from inscriptions not from books

She says let us assume on every point and she tries to paint a different picture...if she's such a great historian why doesn't she write a book and mention all the edicts and challenge the old versions???

Really it's bizarre to know the facts of Ashoka, how wrongly we were taught about him in our history books. Thankyou Keerthi for tracing out the facts and wide opening our eyes😢

My grandfather had read alot about Ashoka and even he told something really similar to what you have mentioned in the video. Good to know, that my grandfather was reading through the right sources.
