I'm guessing the superstar not only makes them invincible, but also increases their athletic ability (clearly) as well as their reflexes. Plus, this is basically the first time in the movie Luigi is devoid of all fear. That kind of confidence is empowering for someone as anxious and fearful as Luigi.
