Spain's richest region Catalonia is preparing for its election on Sunday. The vote is widely seen as a referendum on independence.

Catalonia's president says he's planning a formal split from Spain if pro-independence parties win enough seats, but the government, backed by European institutions, has warned of dire economic consequences if Catalonia decides to split.

Jonah Hull reports from the regional capital, Barcelona.

I´ve been following the news in aljazeera and I must say that I havebeen very impres for your knolege of our culture and backgraund. We are going through dificult times (I was born during Franco times. And for example my family who was in the defited side on the civil war refuses to say to me if there were any casualties. My mother stares at me not saying anything (and there is only her and her sister left). It´s somettingh that since I´ve turned 50 it hounting mesomehow. Is there a body of a family member liying umburied somewere...???? And the Spanish keeep presing. We do pay a lot of taxes that go to the central goverment and they have created a culture of hate towards us. And the sad part it´s in my opinion a way to gain more votes
Any way one thing I didn´t like very much was the beginning . We are more that just a unch of natives dancing a (For the ones thar they don´t know their meening, very boring). Barcelona it´s a fabulose city, modern, full of life, culture, night life....
