Catalonia on the eve of its independence referendum

Spanish police are trying to shut down schools that are serving as voting stations in the Catalonia referendum, so families and committees involved in the bid for independence are camping out at these schools to ensure they stay open.

My impression is that this referendum is being misinterpreted: this referendum is not another case of a rich region not willing to share. This referendum is a case of a region speaking up: we are fed up with historically receiving a colonialish treatment.

Catalan is just barely different from Spanish. Spanish-speakers can understand it easily. Having your own language doesnt mean you get your own country. My country has 170+ languages, and they're much more different than Spanish and Catalan are. Over here, languages as similar as Spanish and Catalan would just be considered dialects of the same language. So you think you're sooo different from Spaniards, but you're not.
