Malfunctioning EGR can cause runnability issues. One way to test EGR is to block it off. How to make a EGR block-off plate and install it on the engine to stop any exhaust gas from re-circulating.

My 2002 Camry XLE would sometimes stall when stopped at red lights, about once or twice a month. At which point, it would be unable to start again for a good 5-10 minutes. I took it into the Toyota Service Center three separate times that it stalled but they were unable to replicate or diagnose the problem. Frustrated I started searching car forums online and someone suggested an issue with the EGR valve. I ordered a replacement online and had it installed. 15+ years later and it has never stalled again.

In order to possibly help someone… ‘98 Avalon with 1MZ-FE.

For years it had a throttle shudder(at all RPMs/only in gear) with no code. I thought it was most likely transmission related.

It finally threw a fleeting code(I just happened to have my scanner hooked up looking at live data whilst driving one day and caught it as it didn’t last long) for EGR position sensor.

Couldn’t find a genuine Toyota part. Amazon China part under Standard auto parts brand. It actually worked. Car drives so much better.

I think your looking in the exact right place my 2003 camry 1mzfe had the exact same problem and it was the egr valve your test was the problem I disconnected the egr through the main harness and it solved all the issues blocking it off only stopped the excess fumes from going into the intake manifold it didn't stop the erratic nature of the bad egr valve wich the car was obviously experiencing I also never had a code thrown

Everyone searching for misfiring problems. On bank 1 try that first cat mine melted everything inside to become a metallic cork in the exhaust downwards from the cat on bank one. To check if it runs better take out O2 sensor on bank 1 and that will free up air. Then if you get power back significantly.. You have your issue.

Doesn't it have 2 screws in the back of the EGR to?

I'm getting P0401 and P0402 both on a V6 2002 camry. Any suggestions ? One code says high flow other says low flow so I don't understand how it can be both.

Egr would have to be removed and put under small amount of pressure to see if the float moves. If that checks out then it needs to be clean out to remove all that carbon build up. If its totally obstructed it will throw a code. Correct me if I'm wrong.
