Dr. K, you're such a treasure man. Lately, each session I have with my current therapist has resulted in me feeling worse. I'm really struggling now and feel constantly burnt out from every single thing in my life. I don't have a job, I dropped out of universe, I talk to only two other human beings (mom and close friend from HS), I don't go outside, I don't even game anymore. I basically just sleep my days away because being asleep is so much more tolerable than being awake. It wasn't until I found this channel, that I realized how a lot of my situation is a result of my ADHD not being treated properly. I've learned so much just from your explanations of different concepts and how the brain works, done in a tangible way that easily make so much sense to someone who plays games. You have officially taught me more about ADHD and answered more of my questions than the psychiatrist who diagnosed me. Same for my therapist. She'll tell me to do things that would theoretically help my depression and anxiety, but actually executing that plan always feels impossible. I've tried bringing this up, but she would shrug it off as "you just have to do it, and you're choosing not to". So with the knowledge your videos have given me, I'm now thinking that I might just not be getting the help I need. She doesn’t seem understand the barrier in executive function that comes with ADHD, and how debilitating that can be. So with that, I'm thinking of trying a different ADHD med and I've started the search for someone new! I already scoped out someone who kinda specializes in ADHD and also has experience with queer youth and adults (which I am). I had a consult with her, she seemed really nice, and I'm hoping to get an appt with her soon!

I haven't gotten myself out of the pit yet, but I at least have hope. I don't think I'd have that without your channel, so thank you Dr. K!

I think lately for me open sandbox games are the epitome of the need to escape and I imagine these games are everywhere. Fulfilling all the different categories of objectives and going for 100% completion feels like doing chores.

I find it sad how many people turn to cosy and building games looking for that sense of being able to live sustainable in a safe community where people help eachother because that feels almost impossible irl. Like, people's wild fantasy is living in a cottage, feeding chickens, and being able to get along with their neighbours

I find games that tease me more fun, there's a game called Shadow of War, which is a game about controlling Captains and taking over fortresses. And when you're defeated by an enemy captain or an ally captain that betrayed you, it feels like I lost respect and the only way to regain said respect is defeating the captain that previously defeated you

I'm not replacing my need for real world productivity with crafting in WoW, I say as I am on hour three of flying around and mining for materials.

I think fun is not the correct word here. Fun comes with pleasant emotions, you feel vigorated and joyful when you have fun. Most videogames nowadays don't give you joy, they just grab your attention and keep you "entertained". I think that's actually the correct word. Today's videogames are more entertaining.

I don't agree that games are becoming more fun, it feels like every year they lose the spirit of adventure, although maybe I'm just old. Now every game literally leads the player by hand "you have to do this to get this", "you have to go there to get to next quest". I remember old games, were very corridor-based, but they throw you into hell with words "have fun" and you explore those corridors according to the "where enemies go that way" rule, until you accidentally find pass to next location.

An RPG with a good Character creator is fun, even more so if the art design of the clothes and armour is on point. I like things that look good, simple as

I always try to make the character look like me, bald, ugly and very average body type; then i play through laughing at all the female NPC comments like "hello handsome" or "you new here sexy" etc. 🤣🤣

I actually think games have gotten less fun over the years due to it becoming more corporate industry people used to make games and come up with interesting ideas for there games for the passion of it now it's for Money & profit that being said, I don't think that falls on any developers. Many of them still have passion it's the producers driving unrealistic realistic deadlines

the reason why some people REALLY like the character customization part and stay HOURS on them even though they just play the game once every blue moon.

not many game devs go that deep into the psych side of things. nintendo does this in a pretty positive and tempered way with many of thier games, while most other devs are just doing what makes them feel good, or what they would have liked as a feature in games they've played in the past. its not nearly as thought out as other industries. though, there are definitely companies that do this.

What makes creating yourself in the virtual world so appealing is that I can look the way I truly wanted to look in that world without suffering from the genetic limitations of how I look in real life. I can make my avatar taller, better looking, more muscular etc. in the way that I just couldn't look in real life due to the genes I was given which I wasn't able to even choose. Real life is too limiting, I must be a slave to what nature gave me. In the fantasy world, I get to choose the way I want to look.

Is that fun though ? Or are games just becoming an avenue for people to meet their psychological needs because in the real world they can't find a way to do so. I don't think being entertained and being satisfied mean the same thing.

I would argue they're becoming much less fun, not more.

I wish this was true. Games are more and more of a chore these days, you can tell people are miserable making them and add things for monetization purposes rather than fun factor.

I wish I could enjoy games still. Almost 20 and I haven't had real fun in a game since I was 14...
