I thought I read or saw somewhere that Tom and Jerry are actually friends. Unfortunately Toms owner finds out there is a rat or mouse inside the house so they want the cat to kill the mouse or rat, so tom pretends to try and kill jerry all the time so they don’t get another cat that will actually kill him. Could be wrong was just something I read somewhere, but is always interesting to think about.

Absolutely believe it! This is why Tom & Jerry was so violent. Mighty Mouse cartoon was very WWII also. I didn't live in that time but growing up WWII references were very present in everyday life in the 70's/80's.
