How Much Would It Cost To Build A PC As Powerful As The PS5? (2021 Edition)

Consoles have become pretty close to PC in many ways over the years, with PS4 and Xbox One utilizing the same x86 instruction set that most desktop CPUs use – as opposed to the PowerPC and Cell chips found in consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively. This has in turn, calls for a number of comparisons to PCs with new consoles often being touted as the most bang for your buck. Of course, owning a gaming PC or a console has its own set of advantages and disadvantages – that’s undebatable.

That being said, it’s always interesting to validate time after time again whether claims of consoles being the ultimate way to play at a budget are indeed true? With this in mind, we try to build a PC using all-new off-the-shelf components that should give performance results as close as possible or even better when compared to Sony’s latest and greatest.

Note: The pricing of hardware is based on what they were during the time of writing of this feature, and may change in the future. Also, we have tried to include components that were close to the PS5’s hardware as it’s not feasible to have a 1:1 component list.

Always important to remember that while building a comparable pc is more expensive, they also can do everything a computer can. If you want a device for exclusively gaming, save the money and pick up a ps5. If you want a computer workstation that also plays games, commit to the investment of a pc.

I prefer consoles for convenience. I have a PC and Laptop but never use them to play, I use them to study and work, do my finances, browse the web...
I use my PS4/5 to Play and entertainment as media centers for the TV.

The SSD you chose is nowhere near as good or expensive as the PS5s NVME. PS5s NVME drive costs about £250

$1137 sounds about right except you can’t actually buy a GPU at MSRP right now. It also doesn’t account for OS, keyboard, mouse, controller (optional), or monitor and speakers (you could plug it into a TV but the positioning would be hard). Hell the RTX 3060 they put in the build is $330 if you can get one from nVidea or EVGA but $400–the same price as the digital edition PS5–from most retailers or $500 for Zotac: insane. Anyone claiming PC systems are cheaper is lying.

This video now is about a year and a half (give or take) old. I just read a couple days ago that the ps5 and series X are on par with a mid tier 2015 gaming PC.
I’m glad to see that was false.

I just generally prefer gaming on a console. Always have. I don't even like desktops anymore and never use mines, my laptop is a basic entry gaming laptop and the highest spec game I've ever played on it is "House Flipper" 😂😂

If you don't include any drive, then why not compare to discless ps5? Add some keyboard/mouse combo, install some linux and you'll be slightly above 3 times the price of a digital only ps5
