2019 Mustang GT | Should You Run 87 Octane (Regular) Gas?

In this video we discuss using the 87 Octane in your Mustang GT with 5.0 engine instead of running 93 Octane (Premium) gas. The cost difference between regular and premium may not be enough, but it adds up.

My 2019 Mustang GT mostly sees 87 Octane gas in it believe it or not. I go through my reasoning and some of the drawbacks I could experience running 87 Octane for my Mustang GT instead of 93 octane gas.

To my surprise, Ford actually recommends minimum 87 octane for our Mustang GTs. Of course, you gain more power and performance running the 93 Octane, but Ford has tuned it conservatively for 87 octane. So on stock Ford tune running 87 octane you may not benefit as much as you would think.

2019 Mustang GTs make 460 HP so unless you are racing or tracking your car you may not see much of performance difference to be honest by running 87 octane instead of premium gas for 93 octane.

In 2022 I'm good with 87. Saving around $120 a month. The car sounds perfectly healthy.

87 drives like heaven 😇
93 can’t catch me 🤣

Oh man, $2.29 a gallon.
The before times!

I have a 2005 GTO that can handle 87 octane, but it's not happy about it. In addition to losing power, I lose MPG, too. Depending on the price difference between octane levels, it ends up costing more for me to run lower than 93.

Bro-sum! I'd be mixing 87 & e85 all day w/prices soaring skyhigh! You'll get proper octane readings of approx. 91-95 w/a ½ & ½ mix for those high comp. bangers bro!😆👌"erryone's doing it man, save a penny dude"

I was told that most 87 rated fuel is pretty much all the same and meets the minimum requirements. Where the higher octane fuels like shell`s V-power the individual company will add special ingredients. Seeing how the 5.0L is port injection it will benefit from the extra cleaners in V-power fuel. You are getting little bit more power and a cleaner engine.

I just traded in my 2020 Dodge Charger R/T for a 2021 Mustang GT Premium. With the Charger, I was only getting 17.8mpg. With the Mustang, Im getting 20.6mpg. The Mustang weighs about 600 pounds less than the Charger. I also often use 88 Octane non ethanol gas in the Mustang.

2022 Gt I use 87 and I mostly drive conservatively anyways dealer filled it with 87 leaving the lot . So it's fine

Having a 2017 GT myself, I can honestly say it runs much better on 93 octane. The dealer recommended I use premium with the 5.0 engine. It's a great car and fun to drive. It has been very reliable as well.
The one major downside to owning one is of course the maintenance costs. Premium gas is pricey and you have to change the Z-Rated tires about every 25, 000 miles.

91 octane minimum in mine! I mix 50/50 with Sunoco 100 sometimes. I can tell you there is a difference. At 12:1 compression 87 is knocking so bad the car is pulling a ton of timing.

I ran 87 oct for a short time when the car was stock & It dynoed at 420 rwhp. But Now we run straight MS-109 with the Whipple .

Nice video. I agree with you. I am going to buy a GT soon and i am not into racing or track use so I would use 87 mostly and maybe 93 once in a while depending on the trip.

I live in Vegas I’ve ran 91 since I bought my 5.0 mustang and the day I ran 87 the car was acting up a little 😅😂

Awesome video, but I just wanted to let you know that Ford does recommend minimum of 91 Octane. Anything lower might also make the engine tick louder

I use 91 but like you say if you're just cruising around 87 won't hurt anything

Every time I put regular gas my car will randomly have a delay in acceleration. Like I am at a stop and hit the gas pedal and car doesn't move forward. A few second delay and then car kicks and goes forward. Happens every time I put regular gas. Very strange.

When you have a 12:1 compression ratio you really should be using the best gas you can find.

Good video, I run 87 in my vehicles, I actually see a big diff when I used Gumout fuel cleaner after 10000 miles or so, seems to clean injection system good JMO

Fuel octane level only helps with avoiding rod knock. The higher the octane the more you can push timing on your engine for more power. The fuel itself doesn't add power, it does tho burn more completely and is better for avoiding knock. If you wanna tune to the moon then higher the better/safer, if you just normal drive then it barely helps. I personally always run 93 in anything im going to drive hard or is blown/turbo with tune. Love to hear what others are doing tho.

I run 93 on my 2018 GT because it feels way better when I drive it the only time it wasn’t on 93 was when I bought it from the delar and it felt sluggish and just wrong
