I've got this theory that Jonas didn't give a damn about safety, danger, or even his own team. The reason I have this theory is that the tornado was so big and powerful that his crew realized the maneuver they were pulling was too dangerous to perform. So they tried to convince him that the base of the twister was so huge that Jonas could not anchor his pack, and even sided with Jo and Bill on warning him that it was not worth it, even Eddie tried to tell him that this was a dangerous time to perform and that they should turn around and leave.

But Jonas's ego and selfishness showed that he was willing to sacrifice his own team, just so he could be rich.

At the very least, Eddie went out painlessly once that debris hit him head on. The angle of where the debris hit the truck indicates Eddie was likely beheaded, thus he didn't suffer. But Jonas? He was still alive (as far as we all know) when he was lifted up and eventually slammed into the ground with an explosion for good measure. He did NOT go out quietly OR painlessly.
