Each tornado in Twister has a distinct sound. The F1 had a deep growl, the waterspouts had the high pitch screeching, the twister on the hill had a very deep machine-like noise to it, the F4 sounded like rushing wind, and the F5 at the end had the true waterfall sound a tornado makes.
What makes the F5 at the beginning so scary, is that it makes all these noises

When I first saw this I remember that opening scene the most. 0:25-0:45. Idk why but that has absolutely stuck with me. The music & that "you know something bad is about to happen" vibe. Haven't forgotten since I first watched it over 18 years ago now.

I’ve been watching this movie since I was 5, the scene where the dad gets pulled into the tornado still makes me feel really bad even at the age of 20

God, I remember watching this as a kid. I was so enthralled with it, the excitement and terror just builds up with every moment at the beginning of this film.

Ngl this scene scared the hell out of me as a kid. There's nothing really Hollywood about this scene, this is exactly what can and does happen.

There was a real life event during the Joplin EF5 tornado in 2011 that happened similar to this. A Pizza Hut manager named Christopher Lucas took shelter in a walk in freezer, along with 20 other people, as the tornado hit. Since the door could not be completely shut, he tried to hold it closed with a bungee cord wrapped around his arm, until he and four others were sucked into the tornado. They did not survive.

For people who are saying that they would be fine if the Jo's father didn't hold the door, there is something you must understand. The tornado was a category F5 and the door was weak to keep it shut. Even if he didn't hold it, the door would still have come off. He tried to add more weight to keep it shut but the tornado was too strong. Not to mention the door was meant to protect them from flying debris.

He should have just stayed away from the door.

One of the most emotionally charged scene I’ve ever seen in a natural disaster film. You can just feel the emotional turmoil the little girl was feeling watching her father gone right in front of her eyes. Very sad😔

Several years ago a series of tornadoes ripped through one of my great aunt and uncle's farms. They weren't there at the time, but when they went out to survey the damage a motor home they had just bought to travel with had been picked up and thrown fifty yards into a ravine. When the insurance adjuster came to take stock of the damages he asked to see the motor home and my great aunt walked him out to the ravine, where the motor home was lying in two mangled pieces. He just said "I think we can call that totaled". The whole farm was wrecked, except for the cabbages. Other crops had been ripped out and destroyed, but the cabbages were completely fine.

The house at the beginning did get destroyed by a tornado some years later and the owner says it was pretty similar to how it got destroyed in Twister.

Interesting fact: the child actress portraying Jo Thornton as a kid there, was none other than Alexa Vega, who later became famous as Carmen Cortez in Spy Kids.

The sheer power and might of a tornado like that is just awe-inspiring and terrifying. I always kept believing that these tornadoes had a mind of their own, like they are alive. When I see a tornado, I couldn’t help but think to myself: “How can something as great and terrible exist??” I know I’m reaching, but you have to admit that it crosses our minds every once a while.

I think this tornado was the scariest one in the whole movie, due to Jo losing her father
