How Aerofarms' vertical farms grow produce

In our series, Real Food, we take a look at the growing trend of vertical farming. Companies like Aerofarms are rethinking how we grow vegetables by going up to provided fresh and affordable produce. Michelle Miller reports.

Could you imagine a 10 story building downtown in a major metropolis full of a vertical farm. You could sell your produce to every single store and I bet that stores wouldn't have to change the price seeing that they would cut out all the shipping cost. Then again I'm not a logistics major nor do I work in supermarkets but it sounds feasible to me.

This at one end of the spectrum, and regenerative farming on the other, is the way to go.

This way of producing food has so much potential in terms of being more sustainable. If you power this with solar or wind, this has the potential to save a lot of emissions caused by shipping transportation.

Also, it has the potential to be more gentle to the big marine mammals who is really suffering due to the intense ship traffic related to transportation of agricultural products produced in foreign countries.

to save energy you can use fibre optics to feed the sun light to the plants and then regulate the electric lights for when they are not producing enough light or at night.

This guy is against because of the high energy consumption, but what about the energy saved by growing food locally, no long distance transport needed, and it's freshest, i'm in NY and some of the vegetables and greens i buy comes from all the way in California, how much energy is spent doing that, plus the fact that this food can be grown all year long, pest control, weather damage, etc etc etc ...and the energy consumption could be mitigated by solar panels or something...

Unfortunately a lot of advancements in renewable energy and lighting efficiency need to occur to make this economically viable. As these technologies improve farms like this will become a lot more common and will be able to grow more than just lettuce and greens.
