First, there are several other things that are causing this issue of the contacts not showing or NO LONGER SHOWING the
WhatsApp Icon/indicator.
We had this same problem on 2 phones at the same time.

All of the info on the internet was like this, going through the same USUAL things that have nothing to do with THIS SPECIFIC problem.

To identify if what I'm talking about is what's affecting you (anyone), you would have noticed that if this Icon was working before, but after an ANDROID system update the WhatsApp Icons where no longer showing in contacts.

What I found is that after these Android updates, either it added a new feature or it ENABLED a feature that was in each app that said something like, "Removed permissions if app is unused" .
*I DISABLED that!*

Then, in the WhatsApp permissions area, I enabled everything.
*I should have mentioned that this was in phone Settings/Apps/WhatsApp then Permissions*

It still did not work!!!!

Then, I went into phone Settings/Apps/Contact/Contact Settings to my surprised THE IMPORTANT SETTING that was causing this problem, "Show 3rd party options.. *THIS WAS DISABLED!*
*I ENABLED this and now the WhatsApp Icon shows up in all contacts where the person uses WhatsApp*

Folks, I dont where else to post : On the S22 when you open up contacts, you may not see what app as an option to use to communicate with your selected contact to correct this do: Open" Contacts" settings ( ie the gear wheel ), Under More Settings, find " Show 3rd party options ", select ON. Open any contact, and the what's app icon should now appear.
