Concisely: APP INFO - Permissions - turn CONTACTS on (or off & then on), "done" ; CLOSE WHATSAPP (clear app from operating), then rerun.

My problem on pixel 4a is it shows contacts fine BUT the amount had disappeared a few months back, refresh not helping. Use to show on top 55 contacts for example but never any amount now! Just the pixel 4a Google problem I wonder?
