Jump Over The Flagpole in Super Mario Bros (NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears! #shorts

There are numerous ways to explore what's beyond the flagpole in Super Mario Bros, but I wanted to show you this one method that involves jumping above the top of the screen to land on a koopa.

In Super Mario Bros for the NES, you can jump over the flagpole in the very first stage of the game using a somewhat tricky glitch. The setup takes some precision, but this game is from like 1853 so by now everyone has a way to play it with savestates.

In level 1-1 stand on the top platform just beyond the level's second bottomless pit and slowly inch to the right until you see a turtle. What you want to do is jump up to the top left corner of the screen just as that turtle (koopa) falls into the bottomless pit. If you timed it just right, you will land on the koopa just once. You'll hear the sound effect and see your points increase as confirmation.

Now wait for the koopa to get back up. If he starts walking to the right, you're in business, baybee! Sometimes the koopa will walk to the left and that's not what you want. These first few steps can be really picky, so don't get discouraged if you can't get it to work right away. It probably took me a few dozen tries.

Anyway, walk with the koopa and keep him on the screen until you get toward the end of the level. What you need to do now is jump from the top of the stairs tower thing just as the koopa is in the right position so that you can bounce off of him by jumping above the top of the screen. For reference, I like to begin my jump just as the koopa is three-quarters of the way across that final green hill you'll see in the background before the flagpole.

But if you time the jump right, you can bounce on the koopa and Mario (or Luigi I guess) will go right over the flagpole.

For some reason, there is a hidden brick block right in front of the castle that you can stand on, but beyond that, there's really nothing to the right of the flagpole. You can run to the right until time expires, and all you will see is a looping background - or maybe your koopa friend if you were kind enough to wait for him.

But it's there, and you can, so give it a try!

What are some other weird tricks in old games you know about? I want to make more of these quick shorts, so leave a comment to suggest more glitches, Easter Eggs, and weird things!

My guess is the single solid block on the castle is there to stop Mario's walking cycle, as well as a "checkpoint" so the game knows he reached that point when the end level animation plays.

I remember when this was a mystery in the olden days

"I know you've always wanted to try this" I tried this 25 times and then did it and it's worth completing the prophecy

That lone brick block blended into the castle is supposed to stop Mario after grabbing the flagpole since he is moved behind the entrance as if he went in. Without that block he'd just walk into eternity. If you look under the entrance you can still see his feet moving, showing the block stopping him.

The brick is there because the call to move Mario into the background is him touching a solid brick after grabbing the flagpole. Which is why the castle opening is solid black.

If you perform the bullet bill flagpole glitch, you will touch the flagpole, bounce off of it, touch the brick, and go behind the background.

As a fun fact, it is actually possible to jump the flagpole without this trick.

A perfectly timed jump from the top of the steps will be just enough to get you over it. Did that a few times as a kid lol

The block there is to stop mario and start making the timer go to zero so it knows how many points to give you. However, when speedrunning the game there’s a complex glitch involving a bullet bill which causes you to hit the flagpole but be on the ground behind it and touching the block at the bottom of the flagpole, causing it to make the timer count down quickly and save time. It’s kind of hard to explain but if you want a more clear explanation of it Bismuth explains all about it in his video where he broke down the 4:55 time.

I saw a video where if you keep running for a LOT of time after passing the flagpole with a hacked timer, the background starts to glitch up. It honestly looks very cool

That brick block Is a trigger to make Mario enter the castle if he has touched the flag and is touching the brick

The brick block is there because the devs noticed that Mario would keep running forward if there was nothing blocking him. So they used a real block to stop him from going forward forever.

Koopa Troopas are turtles. In the instruction manual for this game it describes the Koopa Troopa as "Soldier of the Turtle Empire". So they are definitely turtles.

I bet the invisible block is used in the animation code as a collider trigger when Mario turns into the castle.
Something like:
On touch flag pole.
Land with flag.
On touch ground, walk right.
On touch invisible block, walk into castle.
Unload scene.

I think the invisible block is there to stop mario and create the illusion that he enters the castle.
