For anyone who is wondering if their little air compressor can handle spraying, here's my experience. I have the HF Central Pneumatic 6 gallon 1.5 HP 150 PSI, with the HF 20 OZ HVLP spray gun that according to the manual demands 6 CFM at 40 PSI. I just sprayed three layers of lacquer on a 4' by 6' dining table and not a single issue. The compressor came on one or two times during each layer. I set the output to 40 psi. The tank pressure never fell below 70-80.
I believe the factory specifications are for CONSTANT running of the spray. But what amateur on earth does that? You would need to let the trigger go while you reposition yourself or handle the air hose around the workpiece anyways.

Most of us here are home use people anyways, the pros already know what they need. So thanks the video, we really appreciate the advice.

This method works. One thing that helps tremendously with me is I use as short of a hose as possible. I like to paint guitar bodies and it usually only takes about 30 seconds to do one coat and then you have to wait at least 10 min to apply your next coat which gives my 8 gallon compressor plenty of time to recharge. Getting an lvlp would be a better option as well because they designed to be used with small compressors

*This does exactly what I was wanting **MyBest.Tools** Price was fantastic, lower than Harbor Freight-and it included hose and attachments, and IT IS MADE IN AMERICA, unlike Harbor Freight*

I appreciate you taking a minute to make that video. I'm just a carpenter with the regular size Craftsman tank. I need a gun for some small projects. 👍👍

I sprayed with a pancake for the longest time before I upgraded my compressor. So yeah, you're right, it works

Thanks for posting this. I have a bostich pancake compressor and got a LVLP gun that it matched specs with. Going to paint some motorcycle fenders and fairing etc. Gives me ease of mind that I can just add an auxiliary tank if need be

Just add an auxiliary “keg” style tank to whatever compressor you already have..that will turn your 4 gallon compressor into 14, take a little stress of the compressor and allow longer spray time

I wish I saw this. I bailed out of buying a cheap HVLP gun because the CFC issue scared me off and overpaid in spray cans. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah man. You nailed it. Hobbiest, that compressor WILL WORK.I just did it. Bought a cheap HF hvlp gun, ran it through my Stanley bostich finish nail gun compressor and although it ran the whole time, it gets the job done. Of course she was getting warm, and you are shortening the life of it, it will work.

I read you can use a brass tee fitting to convert a portable pressure tank into an auxiliary tank for your air compressor. It won't change the pressure or scfm, but it will extend the time between compressor cycles.

Brilliant. I just needed to know it had a chance of working. Thanks for making this video!!!

Yup works just fine, I've got "that" Bostitch pancake compressor and for a diy'er it's fine, just spray for a bit then stop, spray then stop... can't paint a car or anything but it does furniture and stuff well

I kinda thought it would work but I read online many ppl saying it won't work. I wish I had seen this video years ago. Glad to know now though. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this video. I have a tank slightly larger than that, and was curious if it was worth getting the guns. Exactly what I wanted to see with you painting a chair and being able to see results.

what if we are using LVLP spray gun to spray paint car parts? it would make less stress on the conpressor right?

Good common sense video, thanks :) I have a 20 gallon compressor and use an LVLP Astro gun and it paints beautifully. Would I like a 60 gallon 220 v compressor? Sure, but I don’t need the cost, weight, and space it takes either.

I was wondering the same thing, I have a much larger compressor a 2HP 29 Gallon so I wouldn't have much of an issue doing the occasional painting on a vehicle, and its not like I'd be running the thing for the whole day with the trigger on the HVLP gun pulled, it would be a minute or 2 then moving things around to paint another section type thing....not sure why people seem to think you would have the trigger pulled on the gun continuously for hours on end...never been in a position that you could do that. I guess maybe if you were painting a train with several cars all at the same time but in reality you would be on and off the trigger and its not like you gotta spray the whole time either, can always stop and take a short break if your compressor can't keep up.
