It's amazing how ancient cultures could produce products that it takes modern science decades to develop and despite that they are still better than our current solutions.

That inability to replicate the results is kind of the key; they indicate that we don't actually know that this recipe works.  It merely CAN work, which is true of almost anything.  The reason we prefer medicines with a scientific basis isn't because they're somehow inherently superior to pre-scientific remedies.  It's that we can know what they do and get them to do it consistently, because we've applied a methodology that gets reliable results.

What's astonishing is that they didn't know of bacteria. Go through these ancient drugs, understand the principe and develop them further. They could complement modern drugs.
