Solus Linux 4.1 KDE Plasma Desktop Overview | Distro Delves S2:Ep7

In this not-final episode of Distro Delves, we'll be looking at Solus 4.1 with KDE and comparing it against our previous review of Solus 4.0 to see how well it competes against itself.

We reviewed Solus 4.0 with Budgie in season one of Distro Delves so it will be fun to see how things change with a later release, and with a different desktop environment! In this Solus review, we're having a look at the brand new release of Solus with the KDE Plasma Desktop.

Solus Linux is one of the few independent Linux distros that doesn't build itself on top of Ubuntu or Arch. Instead, Solus is built from the ground up with only a couple tools from other distros.

Solus has always been my go to. As an average user who doesn't want to have to learn everything there is to know about linux, my mind is always at ease with this distro because I know everything will just plain work. On top of everything just working, Budgie is a simple, modern, sleek, and easy to use DE. Truly great work coming out of the Solus team.

KDE has gotten a lot lighter over the past couple of updates, using around 500 to 600mb when running idly on a lot of different distros out there

Never seem an operating system boot as fast as Solus, it is mind blowing. Although Windows 10 is booting ridiculously fast as well, and most Linux distros are booting prerry darn fast as well. But Solus got me by surprise.

Been running Solus Budgie for 4 months and I have to say: this is my distro of choice. It feels faster than any other Ubuntu Debian based by a long shot and so customizable too. I dont play game so cant say anything about it

I like how Solus customize GNOME desktop. It looks pretty awesome the pure black style is looking good, also I like how they add the Breeze cursor to the theming.

I’m probably gonna setup my wife on Solus. She’s on Pop 19.10 and the update process is not convenient.

Smooth rolling updates, quick startup and shutdown. Familiar and uncluttered modern UI on Budige. Looking forward to Budgie 11, new software center, sol, ferryd and other projects the Solus team have got going on for 2020.

The update part of solus is extermely poor. The mirrors always freeze and you need to restart the update process multiple times as seen at 4:54 . Other than that, its a very solid stable distro.

One of best Desktop linux, solus is stable, fast rolling release, Gnome version of solus is looks pretty awesome, even better then Ubuntu gnome and vanilla Fedora gnome. KDE version looks like another KDE distro

Back in the day KDE was a heavy Desktop. But that was as compared to things like fluxbox, windowmaker, blackbox and so on, which were much lighter on resources. That's where the 'reputation' comes from. When the average Desktop PC had somewhere between 32 -64MB of RAM.

when I ran systemd-analyze on my opensuse leap 15.1 system, I got a total time of 11.8 seconds

Solus seems pretty darn fast to me. Gotta keep an eye on this one.

Dolphin has problems copying ftp from my Oppo A73 mobile phone on Kubuntu and OpenSuSE, but works fine in GNOME (gvfs) and on Windoze.
I would use this commercially if:
1. Could connect to an AD controller (Zentyal is an Ubuntu drop-in replacement compatible AD Controller)
2. LVM encryption AND boot time encryption

Installed 4.1 (Budgie ver.) on my Lenovo T430 (i5 & SSD disk) . After freezing hard on the updates, I rebooted and got Google Earth standalone going pretty well. Didn't like the black theme so I installed a gray theme called Zukitre. Much better. Can I switch to Plasma, I wonder, without a reinstall? I'll keep the OS for a while to see how I like it. Seems pretty flexible.

I love these videos. I just think you should shows us, bumblebee hybrid nvidia bullshit users, some love. :/
I want to use other distros than mint and manjaro, but nvidia can never be installed right for me since I have this crap intel/nvidia hybrid.
