Solus 4 .3 | A Refined And Polished Distro

Solus is an independent distribution that makes their flagship desktop environment Budgie. They've just released a new update to their Fortitude series of distributions bringing them up to version 4.3. New in this release are the Linux Kernel 5.13.1, new desktop environment updates and software stacks plus a whole lot more. In this video I take a look at their Budgie as well as their GNOME edition that ships with GNOME 40.2.

Appreciate you checking this out on real hardware. Solus is currently the only distro I know of where my DualShock 4 connects and works with Steam out-of-the-box.

Really wish they would overhaul their software center app. For someone who is looking, and doesn’t go in already knowing the app they want, they’re just met with no real icons or images. Just basic text and icons of a zip. Just doesn’t compare to Gnome software, or what Pop/Elementary use.

Otherwise, really like Solus Budgie.

Tried Solus a few years ago, and it wasn't impressive. But from ver. 4.1 it has been my daily driver. Fuss free and independent with quick updates.
I use the Plasma version as I found Budgie to be limited in functionality. I admit it hasn't got everything for everybody, but lean and clean is the point.
The KDE version has to be installed from scratch, You can't switch desktop environments post-install.
I wonder if they just called this 4.3 for the attention it gets on Distrowatch.

You do a better job than many YouTubers in reviewing distros but you could still focus more on function over form. It's great you explored Bluetooth drop outs, for example, as that stuff really matters and many distros get it wrong. But you glossed over, for example, your laptop audio not working and that's something you should be complaining about. Your laptop seems to be an 8th gen Intel making it a few years old. There's no excuse for the audio not working out of the box. That's the kind of thing that sends people back to Windows and MacOS. For many Linux is all about the functionality and how it differs from Windows and MacOS rather than the animation speed of special effects, latest wallpaper, or themes. Many distros look great on first install and get positive reviews but, once you scratch the surface and start to actually use them for more than a quick YouTube demo, you find they can be a difficult to use or even an unstable mess under their shiny surface. The developers need more feedback on the functionality rather than the cosmetic stuff that, ultimately, matters way less than broken audio, broken Bluetooth, broken fractional scaling, broken sleep, broken power management, high CPU usage, etc. The development resources need to be directed more to fixing those kinds of things for a smoother experience for non-geeks.

I'm surprised about the added PS5 controller support. Mainly because I would assume that PS4 controller support would inherently mean that the PS5 controller would also work, as they are both quite similar.

Is Solus Budgie DE based on Gnome? If so can you use Dash to panel extension on it? You must be disappointed Tyler because single click set by default on Solus Budgie 4.3.
Edit: I tried Solus 4.3 Budgie and even installed it on my computer, but with the live version and with the installed version, screen went black at random. So removed it and wnet back to Pop 21.04.

I have always followed the progress of Solus and there budgie desktop but I've always managed to have the budgie desktop or system break somehow. I used Solus for over a year a little while back and the whole system broke after an update. Luckily I had another hard drive with all my files on so I simply installed another distro and haven't even considered using it again.

I was hoping to use Solus on my old laptop, that has a dedicated nvidia graphics card, and is hooked up to the TV for streaming and light gaming, but Solus unfortunately does not provide an easy option to install nvidia Optimus.

Solus has personal issues with me. On first boot, terminal works only 4 times and then the next boot is a blank screen

And Found a Bug in the GNOME version. If you switch the buttons to left, they vanish from the settings application.
