High Stress Flight in Cirrus SR22T Gen 6

A visit by the President, similar call signs, lots of traffic and an overworked controller turn a normal routine IFR flight from Santa Monica (KSMO) to Camarillo (KCMA) into twenty minutes of high stress.

Wow. . .to say that was a "busy" flight would be severely understated. I appreciated the way you were thinking out loud during the whole flight. Gave me an excellent indicator of your situational awareness. In order to more quickly empathize with your perspective, I had to finally SEE your N number before I could become more situationally aware of the upcoming similar call signs heading for the same fix. I like that the controller went to King Air; yep. . .listening to others. . .type aircraft would have made it less confusing. Good post.

Great job. Good display of just how intense So Cal flying can be at times! Thanks for sharing.

I see the comments about using the aircraft type in the response. I would also recommend replying with your entire callsign instead of the abbreviated. I noticed he was using your entire callsign to help distinguish between the similar callsigns. Responding with entire callsign helps make sure the correct aircraft is responding.

Ren, having just retired after 39 years in the FAA a suggestion; when you get involved with similar call signs use the type aircraft to be clear, the other aircraft was a King Air you were a Cirrus it would have helped you feel comfortable about the instructions and the controller would have used the same call sign to respond to you Cirrus 8FS and that poor King Air would have been less confused.

My most stressful flights have always been short hops around here in SoCal. It's good practice and keeps you on your toes. I agree with another person who suggested inserting your type (cirrus) before the abbreviated call sign to avoid confusion. Good job!

Hey aren’t, thanks for posting. I’m starting my Instrument training next week. This shows how solid you have to be with your radio work. You did great. Very stressful. But I’m sure IFR makes you a much better pilot. Keep posting these videos. Very helpful for me. Thanks.

REN, I’ve been following your channel since I started my training in a sr20. Next week is my check ride and have learned a ton from your experiences and ready to start my IFR training. I look forward to seeing more and hope to keep in touch. Safe travels! -AK

Only just found your channel, enjoying it. You handled it well, my heart rate went up a beat or two just watching. Reminded me of a busy flight of mine through Heathrow ATZ.

Nice job Ren. I notice that you don't seem to make many, if any, errors with that blazing right hand when using the FMS panel! The sign of a seasoned Cirrus pilot ! Great video.

Hi Ron. Did you forget to add fuel to the computer? You have a caution, low fuel alert on your PFD. That item must be added for you to your check list. Safe flight.

Beautiful approach and landing.

One thing I'd like to ask is how you hold the sidestick. No judgment, because I've never used one before - only yoke and center stick. Is there any value in using thumb and forefinger, as we would conventionally do? Just curious.

Having no idea about how the system works, but if you would not click through the checklists, would it notify you in anyway of checklist not completed?

Short flights are stressful enough, but that was ……. well, it seemed typical for flying in busy areas. Nice work recovering. Don't forget to feed the beast.
