The trouble with most explanations like this is that they explain it as a fact, instead of a phenomenon. I think it would be more helpful if they started with the state of affairs that there is a phenomenon that you can have movement of electrons when there is a break in the conductor. This is the first thing that a child would notice if you had explained to them what a DC circuit is and then shown them the picture with the capacitor in it.

I was confused on one aspect. When the electrons flow through the circuit once, how will they do it again? I'm assuming that a transfer of electrons does not take place between the two plates, which means that one side is eventually going to run out of electrons!
