Just strike once or twice in the middle, but it should be on the side of two adjacent eyes. (In a coconut there is a distant eye and two adjacent eyes). This is how we do it in Kerala, India.

You just needed 1 good strike along the line inbetween the eye.

I did it this way, only with a hammer... after 7-8 whacks, I became so angry that I immaturely threw it on the ground like a child. It worked.

Worked well for me. Just be careful that the coconut doesn't go flying (I had a dry coconut).
