Cervical cerclage is the placement of a suture or tape to support and partially occlude the uterine cervix to reduce the risk of preterm delivery in the face of cervical insufficiency. A number of procedures have been described, but the most common and simplest is the McDonald cerclage, which is described here.

The evidence would suggest placing the suture much higher up the cervix than this. I am also concerned how deep the bites are taken: Deeper the bite more chance of entering canal which is not only a bad idea ( ‘ occlusive’ sutures have been shown to have worse adverse outcomes) but also the deeper the bite, the less cervix that is included within the circumference of the suture and therefore outside the ‘purse’ string effect.
