It is essential that you prove that your depression is related to your active service in order for you to qualify for VA disability benefits for depression. If you have a disability based on hearing loss or tinnitus, you must prove that your depression was caused by these conditions. In a case like this, you want to file a secondary service connection claim.

This means that even though your medical conditions are not related to direct service, there is a medical connection.

Just rated for 70% for depression as secondary. Yes I had the symptoms for years and after a divorce and other issues I finally did something about it. If you honestly have it, then get it rated and get some help.

Last VA C/P exam for PSTD lasted 15 minutes maybe. I was honest and told the examiner all the horrible and disturbing things I was thinking and going through and boy he was trying to get the hell off the call.

Now I’m rated at 100% P/T w/ SMC

I have a diagnosis of tinnitus and I just began seeing a mental health doctor. I have read in my doctor visit notes that they said I have Manic Depression. During a couple sessions I have commented on how loud the ringing in my left ear is and that is why I sleep with a box fan, so as to drown out the ringing. I also told them I keep music playing in the background while in my office at work in an attempt to distract from the ringing. The ringing is so loud.

They always start out asking if I want to hurt myself or suicidal thought. I tell them if I did I would not tell them, but I do have strong urgers to throat punch people. Honestly I feel like getting 100 acres and putting a house in the middle to stay away from people. The problem is I work in the public sector performing life safety inspections on buildings. So I am dealing with people all day long. It is so taxing. I know that is why on the weekends I just it at my computer with my headset on playing games. I hate that I am like that. My wife and kids do not deserve me being this way.

Go to your local VA and request mental help from a social worker, my social worker later referred me to a psychiatrist who later diagnosed me with Depression due to medical conditions and anxiety. Took about 6 months.

Got 10% for depression/ anxiety, and adjustment disorder. C/P exam was supposed to be 1 hr lasted 12 minutes with him asking me if I’ve gone to college where I live and basic questions like that never once asked me about my conditions or symptoms.

Hey CC! First off, your site has a TON of great stuff so thank you for all you do for us Vets! I have "mood disorder with depressive features" as a secondary to hearing loss (hearing is SC but at 0%) rated for 50%. I have had it for almost a year now and have been prescribed meds and I also have talked to a counselor numerous times last year and early this year, but only once in the past three months. Is there a magic number for seeking counseling sessions or just call when I need\want to talk? I don't want to call them every time I have a small issue that I can work through myself, but I don't want the VA to think that I'm better either and pull my rating. I know there is no wrong or right answer, just looking for opinions. Thank you again for your help!

CC I have a question . I’m currently suffering from somatic symptom disorder and anxiety . I’m currently gathering medical evidence and have summited an intent to file . However I am confused can I file both anxiety and somatic symptom disorder secondary to Thoracic strain at the same time ? I know you said you can only be rated for one mental health claim at a time so I am confused . Thank you for your time .

Can depression be secondary to any other service connect disability? Injuries I've sustained on my spine prevent me from partaking in the hobbies I love. This has taken a heavy toll on me in the past few years.

I have a claim in for depression and anxiety as a primary condition, I'm not sure if there was a single event that caused me to become depressed. But I know it began during my time in service. I have been rated at 10% for tinnitus so if this doesn't work out I will try to claim as a secondary.
