Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Test As Real Diamonds?

What happens when you diamond test lab grown diamonds? I put it to the test using a brand new diamond tester.

Video Description: Many people wonder if lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. In fact, many people mistake lab-grown diamonds as "fake" stones such as a CZ. In this video I test 3 stones: A natural (mined) diamond, a lab-grown diamond, and a cubic zirconia.

Hi Modern Goldsmith, I'm from GEMORO, the manufacturer of the Testerossa tester you are using in your video. THANK YOU so much for providing this super informative video! 100% of what you are saying is correct. There are two types of diamonds, ones that come from below the earth (mined), and ones that come from above the earth (lab grown). Both are 100% diamonds.

I did want to add some more to the info provided to your viewers. First of all, when using our tester, it is important to hold the ring in one hand, while you hold the tester in the other. While the tester works the way you used it, by holding the ring it completes an electrical circuit through your body and allows the METAL ALERT function to work. While it very rarely occurs in nature, diamonds in general aren't electrically conductive, yet moissanite is electrically conductive. When testing for diamonds, we test for the stones thermal conductivity. When testing for moissanite, we are testing to see if the stone is electrically conductive. We use both thermal and electrical conductivity tests simultaneously to screen out moissanite, since moissanite is both thermally conductive and electrically conductive. Unfortunately, metal is electrically conductive as well, so if you accidentally hit a prong on the setting, if you're not holding the ring, the stone could appear to test as moissanite. If you are holding the ring when doing this, the metal alert feature will activate to warn you that you hit the prong.

There are two methods for producing a lab grown diamond, HPHT and CVD. This is important because HPHT diamonds are also electrically conductive, while most CVD diamonds aren't. What this means is that if you test an HPHT lab grown diamond, don't be surprised if it tests as moissanite since they are both electrically conductive! Most all lab grown diamonds have a laser inscription on the stones girdle that has the stones lab grading report on it, that identifies it as a lab grown diamond. When viewed with a 20x loupe or magnifier or microscope, the report number will start with LG, which stands for Lab Grown.

I hope this help!

I stayed away from lab grown stones because the few times I tried using them years ago, customers said no, they wanted real. Recently have be learning how the acceptance of lab grown stones has become much more acceptable as more customers are becoming educated as well. This was a brilliant test. Thanks!

Fun fact :
Lab grown diamonds are 100% carbon
Natural diamonds are 97-99.9% carbon +oxygen and nitrogen

So basically, lab grown diamonds are more diamonds than natural diamonds

Great video! I love how you explained the ethical part of natural diamonds vs lab grown diamonds. Really puts things into perspective!

To me, lab grown diamonds are a no-brainer. To those that claim that mined diamonds are better, allow me to remind you that pearls for the last 100 years have been semi artificial 🤷 (it's still the pearl oysters doing the work, but they are artificially seeded)

I have a lab-grown diamond engagement ring, I love the fact that I have a conflict-free, higher clarity, carat size and with fewer imperfections for a fraction of the cost compared to an earth-grown diamond. I love that I can wear it guilt-free and man is it stunning!

This is so GREAT! It's such a joy to find out exploitive companies can be pushed out, keeping our earth and people a little bit more intact while still having a product for jewelcrafters and jewel lovers

Surprising absolutely no one... except people who don't know how lab-grown diamonds work.

I just purchased a lab grown pink 1.5 CT diamond ring for £65. I'm very happy with it, and I think it's absolutely gorgeous. Will definitely be buying more.

Would love to see you test Moissanite and white Sapphire too!

Easy moral to the story: If someone is losing money on their store and tells you not to buy something that saves you money, you should definitely buy the thing that saves you money. Lab grown diamonds are the EXACT same thing as natural. Except: guaranteed no one died in a mine or was a slave to get you your diamond. Since no one else will say it...

Awesome video! The YouTube algorithm has been suggesting the hell out of this video for the last two weeks, so I thought I'd finally watch it 😂

I don't know if maybe it's the quality of lab grown supplied, but I work for a jeweller who contracts to a major jewellery retailer. We deal with hundreds of repairs a week and we find we can quench a natural diamond and apply a lot of direct heat to them no problem, but we treat lab grown diamonds like sapphires and find they are more likely to crack when quenching or applying a lot of heat, so we treat them like they're not a diamond. But they certainly look like a diamond 🙂

One positive note about lab grown diamond is that the price is base on the work it takes to create your own diamond as compared to natural diamond which are wildly abundance but artificially suppressed to create scarcity.

I think your metal craftsmanship is extraordinary, and love the way you help people with designs repurposing stones ♥️🕊✌️

You really have educated me on this topic. Lol I wasn't sold until the moment you started listing the ethics one could abide by, by choosing lab grown diamonds over diamonds grown in Earth. I personally love the sentiment of it being grown in Earth naturally. But I'm sold on lab grown diamonds because of the ethics. Thanks man :)

“Technology Beyond Comprehension Is Considered Magic” I’m a sucker for the advancement in scientific technological material engineering and these are at the pinnacle. I remember explaining these to people when I bought a necklace of these and their response was the prefect symbolism of the saying because they could believe it! People think that only cars, phones, tv’s, cars etc. are the pinnacle but don’t know that it goes everywhere.

You were caught on here saying lab-grown diamonds or real diamonds. Per your video that would be incorrect. You should have said lab-grown diamonds or natural diamonds. Right?
Nice video straight to the point. 👍👍

I really enjoyed this video. Even though I prefer my stones from the earth, it's always good to know there are just as natural options for a smaller price tag. That is my only concern, is retailers selling these lab diamonds like they are natural from the ground. That's a no for me and I will not pay the prove of natural to a lab grown.
