A leap year is one in which one extra day is added to the calendar year to keep it in sync with the astronomical or seasonal year. Calendars with the same number of days in each year drift over time with regard to the event that the year is designed to monitor since seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in a full number of days. The drift can be addressed by adding an extra day or month to the year. A common year is a year that is not a leap year.
