“The Last Shall Be First and the First Shall Be Last?”

What does it mean, “The last shall be first, and the first shall be last?” This quote is from Matthew 20, which is a parable of the vineyard workers. The owner of a vineyard hires workers at different points during the day, and at the end he pays them the same wage regardless of how long they worked.

Through this parable, Jesus is trying to help us understand that the basis of salvation is not how long we have known Jesus. It is that we know Jesus. And whether we know Him for a moment or our entire lives, heaven is where God wants us all to be, where there will be no ranks. We don't have to belong to a special group or put in a certain amount of time or effort to receive God's favor.

The grace of God is dependent on the faithfulness of Jesus, and not on what we do. Jesus rewards everyone equally, and as stated in John 14, Jesus promises that He will prepare a place for us so we may be with Him also.

Does that also point that the 'grace' of getting a reward is the same as promised to the one who came in the beginning and the one who came in the end. The promise of eternal life is the same to the one who believed first and the one who believed last. This does not make us compete with each other but we consider ourselves blessed that we could become first though we came in the end.

The corn. God reveals the image of his working structure, through the likeness of his word.
