I've always looked at it's current state and end grain, but never thought of comparing the two end grains.

I love wood with warped grain; it looks so much more interesting. That said, I tend to buy hardwood spindles instead of boards so the warping is constrained somewhat by the extra bulk & density. Clamp 'em down with the heating on as soon as I buy 'em, dry 'em right out, add oil, square up, more oil, lovely. If only they weren't hell to plane..

Good tip! I've never checked that before. My family already says it takes me too long to pick out boards. lol I go for the lighter boards too thinking they are dryer.

Great tip, thanks for uploading. I also find it important to avoid the big box stores where they store their wood inside. We have a smaller, local retailer who keeps their stock outside in a giant lumber yard. Seems especially important here in Canada where our temperature and humidity varies so widely (minus 30 F to plus 90 F within six months of each other).
