How to Use a Carbonator Cap to Force Carbonate Cider Without a Keg

The cap is essentially one-way valve that is identical to a ball lock keg fitting which attaches to a CO2 tank. The Carbonator Cap is designed to fit most plastic soda bottles which act similar to a small keg. Once the bottle is filled and the cap is secured, the bottle can be pressurized with CO2. With a few shakes and a little bit of resting time, the CO2 will dissolve in the cider and just like that, you have a carbonated cider!

Your will need:

How to Use a Carbonator Cap to Force Carbonate:
1. Fill a plastic bottle with cider leaving generous headroom for shaking
2. Squeeze the bottle to remove any air in the headspace
3. Screw on the cap and connect the ball lock fitting
4. Set the CO2 pressure low and slowly turn on the take to pressurize the bottle
5. Increase the pressure to 30PSI, DO NOT OVERPRESSURIZE THE BOTTLE
6. Disconnect the ball lock fitting and shake the cider vigorously
7. Allow the cider to rest and add more CO2 if the bottle softens

Now I don't know much about brewing yet, but I know a bit about chemistry. The ability of a liquid to dissolve a gas within itself is temperature dependent; colder liquid can hold more gas. Wouldn't it be more efficacious to do this with the cider chilled?

This is great, I'd been thinking about a carbonation cap for my home brew beer but thought i'd need to leave it for a day or two. Giving it a few shakes is much better, I can do a whole batch of beer (10x2 litre bottles) in one go. Like you i'm limited for space so was looking for a solution that didn't need a keg. This is perfect.

I had no idea those carbonation caps existed for use on a pop bottle. Thanks for the video!

Dude! Love your videos and your inclusion of recipe and steps in your info below the video. Gonna give this a try! I am new to home brewing and been a bit afraid to get started. Your step by step process makes it super simple to follow. Thanks so much. I look forward to more videos. Cheers 🍻

Dude, we can see the liquid backflowing in your hose as your connector valve is faulty and the pressure in hose is lost every time you disconnect it.
Keeping up the supply pressure and having it connected while shaking and simply disconnecting when gas flow reduces is a better option to prevent backflow.

Why was the volume of liquid less than carbonation, when you poured into glass? Thank you in advance.

Can I bottle after carbonating cider this way?

So to replicate this i'd need a) a carbonator cap that fits onto the 2 litre plastic bottles I use b) a ball-cap connector, c) hose d) regulator and e) co2 tank? Is there anywhere you know of where I can buy all of that together to make sure it's all compatible with each other?

They make a product called beer gas which has some nitrogen mixed in with the co2 to make it less foamy.

After the co2 is dissolved into the cider, can you remove the charging cap and replace with a normal screw on cap?

I just picked up a carb cap the other day before watching this video. And I'm curious is it difficult for you to attach your ball lock to the cap? For some reason mine seems to be a bit snug and find myself having to force it which doesn't seem right (doing this often is a tad annoying when you're making a lot of seltzer and not a homebrew). Looking for advice/opinions. Cheers

If I wanted to back sweeten and force carbonate, would I do what you did here, then proceed to siphon the cider into the bottles?
