POSTERIOR CERVICAL SPINE MUSCLES(BIOMECHANICS OF SPINE)Physiotherapy Tutorial

summary of the video with the time for reference:

1.Function of cervical muscles
-hold the head in the right position
-movement occures according to the attachment of the muscles

2.Trapezius
-Superficial
-ipsilateral lateral flexion and contralateral rotation
-bilateral activation causes extension

3.Levator Scapulae
-large cross sectional area
-ipsilateral lateral flexion and rotation
-posteror shear force against the aterior shear force of gravity
-In forward head the anterior shear force is increased with lordosis and levator scapulae can become overactive and painful
-you should not stretch the muscle as it can hamper its ability to produce posterior shear force in turn worsening the situation

4.Suboccipital
-very small muscle hence its funvtion is mostly proprioceotion and fine tuning the movements

5.Superficial muscles are prime movers whereas the deep muscles are stabilizers

6.Splenius capitis
-large and deep
-high moment arm hence the prime movers
-create extension bilaterally and ipsilateral rotation

7.Semispinalis capitis/cervicis
-optimal moment arm
-has fuction of movement and stability
-creates extension and cervical lordosis
-function is similar to lordosis
-Grater occipital nerve pierces this region entrapment of which can cause Cervicigenic headache

8.Longissimus capitis/cervicis
-deep with low moment arm with fuction of stability

Your point is very interesting that stretching certain muscles can reduce their possibility to generate force.

Great content bro and am learning points not mentioned by other educators

Just a quick point, longissimus is considered an intermediate intrinsic back muscle and is more superficial than semispinalis which is considered deep

Wishing you success and look forward to seeing more videos

Ps can you please have more in depth video about sacral torsion and how some therapists treat it . Terms like left on right torsion etc

Many thanks
