The story of Avatar the Last Air Bender is one of many things. Primarily, it’s a coming of age story that centers around a protagonist who is between being a kid and being an adult, who’s trying to find his footing in a world that expects too much of him. To many, this theme is all but too familiar to them. One of the defining moments in Aang’s life however was his decision to run away, attempting to hide from the responsibilities that came with being the Avatar. He carried guilt with him for much of his life, feeling that he had betrayed his friends and family by not being there. But the truth is known that if Aang had been there when the Fire Nation attacked, he would also have been killed. So the interesting thing to wonder is what would have happened if Aang had stayed behind with the Air Benders? What if he had been there during the attack? What if he died? And for the sake of it, let’s question what if Katara had been the Avatar instead while we’re at it.

Katara literally bringing down the house on the Royal Fire Family was a perfect way to end the war. I hope we still somehow get Republic City.

And Sokka and Yue likely get together in this. Their kids/grandkids would be awesome.

The only thing this What If is missing is Toph.

Strangely enough, I always saw an AU where Katara being the Avatar would have had the detail that Airbenders would still be around if Aang had survived long enough to fulfil certain duties as the Avatar; if he was found out as the Avatar then attacks on any surviving Airbenders might end.

12:28 Unless you're implying that Bumi figured out Aang was the avatar before the monks told him, Bumi wouldn't have known that Aang was the air nomad avatar before Katara.

If Katara was the Avatar, I imagine she and Azula would have become arch-rivals. I could see a situation where Azula gets her ass handed to her by Avatar Katara, losses her shit over getting beat by a 'peasant' waterbender and obsessively tries to find some way to destroy her. This could lead her to Wan Shi Tong's library, since Zhao made no secret about visiting the place to find an advantage over the Fire Nation's enemies, surely Azula would have heard about it from him. She goes to the library, manages to trick Wan Shi Tong into letting her peruse his collection (even gifting him some Fire Nation books to replace the ones Zhao destroyed). In the library she discovers two things. 1. If Katara is killed in the Avatar state it will end the cycle, and 2. Vaatu's power matches that of Raava. She somehow finds her way into the spirit world, goes to the Tree of Time and frees Vaatu, who then possesses her and they become the Dark Avatar.

Fire Nation didn't know if the air nomad avatar was still alive. That's why they killed the last souther waterbender because most likely be the next avatar (which is katara)
