Starlet explores the unlikely friendship between 21 year-old aspiring actress Jane (Dree Hemingway) and elderly widow Sadie (Besedka Johnson) after their worlds collide in California's San Fernando Valley. Jane spends her time getting high with her dysfunctional roommates and taking care of her chihuahua Starlet, while Sadie passes her days alone, tending to her garden. After a confrontation at a yard sale, Jane finds something unexpected in a relic from Sadie's past. Her curiosity piqued, she tries to befriend the caustic older woman. Secrets emerge as their relationship grows, revealing that nothing is ever as it seems.

I was especially fascinated by the fact that Sean Baker used humour to set off and emphasize the tragedy of the storyline. The contrast definitely worked for the film.

Love love LOVED this movie. There is nothing stereotypical about it. Every time you think "Oh, I know what's gonna happen!" you are WRONG. Loved it. . just a simple story about 2 people finding friendship.

saw it yesterday, it was wonderful. very real, very honest ... I like how the story in the trailer is the same, but the plot looks different so when you actually see the movie you are surprised over and over again. I recommend this so much!!

I am here because this movie was referenced when the reviewer was talking about Anora. Now I am going to have to watch both. I think Starlet is going to have me crying though.

I saw this movie years ago and never paid attention to who the director was. Recently after watching Anora I wanted to see more Sean Baker films and wow it’s kind of full circle that I fell in love with this movie all this time ago. Sean definitely has a knack to for realistic film with raw emotions.

There's a lot more to the film than what's shown, so they didn't reveal too much. One of the best of the year, that very few will actually see.
