Tabs for notes, ears for timings.
Adjust notes as necessary

In my opinion is better learning by watching covers

A funny thing happens when I use tabs. If I want to learn a song, I better do it by ear because if I use tabs I'm going to wind up writing my own song. I start learning the tabs, following them carefully and trying to make the sound come out right. Then I make a cool mistake and suddenly I'm off in the weeds coming up with a new riff or melody. One of the coolest things I have ever written came out of symphony of destruction. Of course it is NOTHING like symphony, but trying to learn the tab took me there. I have never successfully learned a song through tab. I have written several that started out that way though.

Use both, ears and tabs(which sometimes are wrong) but some little licks and notes especially in particular old albums cant be catch with ear, for example you did make mistakes with Blackned.

That's alright actually. I know that was a technique that Mozart used a couple of times. Most notably when he heard a song performed at the Vatican city in Rome which was not allowed to be heard by outsiders. But he listened to it and he memorised most of it and wrote it down on paper, and then he went back again to fill in some gaps. He was arrested for revealing it to the public, but the Pope at the time congratulated him and let him off, because he was impressed by his listening skills.

I rarely use internet tabs, they are sometimes right though . Buy the books its more beneficial if learning by looking at the musical notes and tabs.

Justice for All tab book is mostly accurate but the tab for blackened looks strange and that main riff doesnt seem to make sense on the official tab for some reason.

I am like you I learned the basics of drum notation but since I started up again I try to learn mostly by ear?  And I listening to the music I am trying to learn also numerous of times and I watch videos here on YouTube  to see different ways certain parts are played!!

I would say yes, in standard tuning with an acoustic guitar just for the sake of future callouses that will make playing electric guitar easier to play. IMO acoustic is harder to play and pile on standard tuning (spider fingers) and you will be playing any gauge string in a matter of months.

How about shredding solo's. Do these by ear? 😅

Was Metallica touring the UK around 9 months before you were born? You may just be the son of Hetfield!

I sometimes use tabs or Tascam cd gt1 or slow down you tube videos, but if you can learn a song by ear is far more satisfying in my opinion riff on all

I do this by drums I can hear a blast beat and gear individual notes rather than just a blast and I can instantly play it perfectly. I can pretty much play anything note perfect on drums by ear. Imagine learning drums by tab, you'd be reading individual notes for each roll going that was 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 then crash then 1 2 3 4 5 bla that's so hard rather than hearing dumdedumde and playing it. I also learnt loads by watching drummers.

I'm learning only by ear nowadays. Too many mistakes on tabs floating around on the internet.
Also, as I like doing covers and riffs from new releases usually there aren't any tabs to learn from :)
It's a great exercise, and you are right, the more you do it the better you'll become at it.
