So... I'll give you the basic explanation of the song. Essentially, it's a song about growing up and trying to become a man. Adam (the singer) used the character 'Maria' to represent part of himself, and both her struggles and the narrator's struggles in the song are related to the many issues of trying to grow up, mature, and make life work. The chorus ('round here....') are all these idioms that kids are commonly told, about how to face life. But the character at the end rebels against them, saying things like "we stay up very very late" and "nobody makes us wait". But still he's finding, whether he abides or rebels, he can't seem to make anything work out. The last lines of "I'm innocent, I'm under the gun... and I can't see nothing" is pretty much the place Adam was at in his mid-20s trying to make his life work. Since, at the time he wrote it Counting Crows didn't exist and he was basically nobody. Just some no name songwriter, hoping for change.

This is from on one of the greatest and most heartbreaking albums ever recorded. “ August and Everything After “ is an absolute masterpiece. Every song is great except for the one they chose to play on the radio Mr Jones..

This is my absolute favorite band. They have so many amazing songs, but they don't really fit into the mainstream scene. Almost every one of their songs has a story to go along with it and if you learn the story, it makes the song even better. Adam Duritz is the singer and songwriter for the band and he puts a lot of emotion into his art and it is usually about a specific part of his life, and that's what I love aboutit. I understand it might not be for everyone. If you're looking for the upbeat, party, bubblegum pop type of music, that's not them. But if you are interested in meaningful, deep lyrics, with good music, then they have an abundance of that.

Great reaction! The Counting Crows have many songs which are brilliant poems when read without musical instruments

you want an even better experience find the many alternate live versions which extend the song 3-7 minutes longer where adam inserts other songs and his own new lyrics in to make it different each time.
