I read an article in National Geographic years ago about a diver in the Sea of Cortez. The diver was attacked by multiple squids, and the fact that he survived was a miracle.

I've been a waterbaby since I was a little Cherokee kid. I learned to surf on the east coast and became better at it on the west coast.
I began scuba diving in the military. And was pretty adept underwater.
When a few of us who surfed managed to align our leave so that we could surf together, were anxious to surf in Baja. It was there that I began to hear about the Humboldt squid and how terrifying they could be.
After getting my friends to listen to how frightening these cephalopods could be. We decided to stay away from the Sea of Cortez for doing any diving while we were off.
Thanks, no.
Also, diving at night?
Not a chance, no way, no how.

Wow, what a completely awesome documentary that's given me a very different vision of what Humboldt squid behavior can be.
They were enthralling to watch when not being fished under terrifying conditions for the animals.
This was a fascinating glimpse into their lives.
Sgi is how we say thank you in my first language, for such an exquisite vantage point of these amazing creatures.

What about the lady who was attacked back in 2012 or 2013 who was a experienced diver who was attacked back the Humboldt off a beach in San Diego CA. While she shouldn't have dived alone, she had heard about the Humboldt being right off the beach, and they were very active at night. They have a form of communication by changing colors, she had gone in the water with her diving gear and she was amazed by the flashing colors and started to follow. However when she was at point were the water started to get deeper, the Humboldt's suddenly changed color and began to try and pull her deeper. She was able to get back to the beach with minor injuries, and she realized that she was very lucky and had almost been another example of what not to do while diving.
I used to live in LA for about 15 years, and used to have no problem with going into the ocean, surfing, swimming, and sailing and taking smaller power boats out into the ocean. However because of some of the problems with CA and the discoveries in the last decades I now live in AZ. I don't want to be a dish for happy fish.
And when the big one hits, we will have beach front property in AZ 😅😂

A really unusual, informative episode. The main characters, humans I mean (Jacquie, Mike and Scott), are very honest and genuinely passionate about the squid and their extraordinary behaviors. They are credible and interesting; the photography is excellent and the whole package is intelligent, dynamic and educational. Thanks for your fine documentary work. This delivers.

Give them a few minutes and they'll figure out how to overcome that anti-squid suit. They'd probably think you're something like a crab or lobster and treat it like a carapace.

I hadn't been aware that Billy Idol had gotten himself into the marine biology racket!

Homeboy is proud of his Star Wars Wasp Anti squid suit....love his smile...then again he is diving around 6 ft long squids, I would call him no less brave if he wore a Hello Kitty Hardsuit

- 40:00 To fishermen: They only want to eat you because you want to eat them. I guess it is karma in a way. Wouldn't you attack someone trying to attack you && your family && friends? I believe so.

During World War Two, giant squid came to the surface to feast on the dead bodies of drowned sailors after their ship was torpedoed.
There are even accounts of squids attacking life rafts and trying to drag sailors from those rafts with their tentacles.

Its amazing how our arrogance knows no bounds, whether we go into the ocean the jungle or the forest, we seem stunned that the predators in these areas don't realize how special we think that we are, surprise surprise.

At 31:30 "Mike and Jackie manage to free one lucky squid, which jets off into the sanctuary of deeper water." I bet their Mexican fisherman hosts appreciated that.
