The squid isn't attacking him -- it's dying, and trying to keep itself afloat. It's just trying to hold on to the board. You can't see it very well in the rest of the video, but its mantle appears quite pale near the beginning, which is possibly a sign of shock. It also looks like the skin might be shredded a little, which would fit with injury; cephalopods' flesh turns white at points of injury, and during blood loss.

It's not uncommon for dying giant squid to float up to the surface just before death. Most of the specimens fishermen and scientists find are way above their normal depth -- especially during daytime.

Plus, this type of squid-- which must be a young giant squid, , or a ridiculously massive Humboldt-- either way, both are normally known for being aggressive and explosive in their movements -- but this one looks like it can barely move.

No wonder it's trying to latch onto the board.
