I can't get enough of Bart Ehrman. Thanks, and good job having him on your show.

The thing about Matthew is anytime he quotes the Old Testament to validate Jesus being the messiah every verse is completely out of context and the verses have nothing to do with Jesus.

Mark was a short story. Matthew turned it into a novella.

Thank you Stephen for this interview. I took Bart's course on Matthew and was so impressed that I bought his earlier course on Mark which was equally excellent. Both Bart and Issac Asimov are primarily responsible for my understanding of the bible and hence my rejection of higher powers. As Bart so succinctly states, I am an agnostic athiest. I applaud your questions to Bart as not only being thought provoking to him, but to myself as well, Keep up the good work.

As a Matthew, I'm all for exposing myself

I would assume Matthew gets read the most because it comes first in the list of books, so when someone sits down to read the Gospels you start with Matthew because it goes Matthew Mark Luke John and that's as far into it as many people read. Then they don't get all the way through Matthew or they finish it and don't start Mark. That seems most logical to me.

I never guessed we'd see Dr Ehrmann on Rationality Rules. I have purchased many of Dr Ehrmann's courses and find them all most interesting

Solid conversation.

Shame about the Mark Wahlberg, praying Christian ad that keeps popping up. Shouldn't they be praying in private, behind closed doors? Or was Jesus wrong?

Wow, I think I'm finally early! But yay! A Rationality Rules after a Low Fruit a short time ago!👍💙💙💙🥰✌

I love Bart E, and his show with Megan L. I think it's funny how some atheist, especially mythicists, think Bart isn't "atheist enough" or something. Even in this interview, he hits the highlights and then says "yeah, none of that actually happened". He's a new testament scholar, what he does is in his title.🤷‍♂

The vast majority of Christians forget a few small details. Jesus was born Jewish, lived Jewish and died Jewish. Christianity therefore began as a Jewish sect. The author of the Gospel of Matthew was speaking to a Jewish audience. Of course, this is opposed to Paul's desire to build a religion that appeals primarily to Gentiles. Paul won.

All other impossibilities aside, how did a group of travelers from the (far?) east, who sighted a star in the east, follow that star to a city in the west?

It’s mind-boggling to me how so many people in this world believe ancient, pre-scientific myths and fables not only about Jesus, but all the other gods that were created so long ago. It amazes me that, let’s say in modern America, people base their life, their thoughts and plans around stories written and told thousands of years ago, and that cannot be verified at all to be truthful. That really boggles my mind. There’s so much in modern life to actually learn and know and do and accomplish. Why would anyone focus on the purported deeds and stories of men fading to echoes of long lost time? I guess it must be because of fear. People are afraid of death and they want some type of reassurance that everything continues after they’re dead and gone. That this life is not The End.

Talking about christ and Christianity calling the "end times" . I had Jehovahs witnesses knock on my door yesterday, using the exact same talking points as they did when I was a JW twenty years ago.😅 and have been saying for over a century. We are living in the end times any second now.

Does the course tackle the odd connection between Paul and "Jesus"? For example, what Jesus says in Matthew 5:11 (The triplet...Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account) and what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4:12-13? (The triplet...When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we speak kindly)? Who is quoting who? What explains the strong connection between the teaching of Paul and the teaching of "Jesus"? Is it divine inspiration or is something else going on? Why are the two teachers so closely aligned? The institution of the eucharist in Matthew 26:26-28 seems to be taken practically verbatim from what Paul "received from the Lord" and recorded at 1 Corinthians 11:23-25.
