Bart D. Ehrman, the New York Times bestselling author of Jesus, Interrupted and God’s Problem reveals which books in the Bible’s New Testament were not passed down by Jesus’s disciples, but were instead forged by other hands—and why this centuries-hidden scandal is far more significant than many scholars are willing to admit. A controversial work of historical reporting in the tradition of Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, and John Dominic Crossan, Ehrman’s Forged delivers a stunning explication of one of the most substantial—yet least discussed—problems confronting the world of biblical scholarship.

I love Bart Ehrman's books. "Forged" is a great book. So is "Misquoting Jesus." I think I'll re-read them after I finish "The Quest for Mary Magdalene" and "The Hate U Give."

I love listening to Bart. I was looking forward to this one. ❤ This was a great conversation 👏

We read his book on the New Testament at my uni and everyone loved it because Ehrman really knows how to explain stuff.

1:50:50 Guys, what they are saying is that if Paul were re-written later, they would have changed all his "the world is going to end tomorrow!" stuff because it undermines his credibility

Great video content. Pleasantly surprised with Bart Ehrman. This will be the first video ive ever watched of his that ive not wanted to critique.

Absolute joy of a discussion. Thanks to both of you.

Bart is such good value for money, entertaining and illuminating. Jacob, why don't you come back and open up the discussion a bit, when he's done answering, instead of moving staraight on to the next topic?

Bart is always a wealth of information.

It is interesting that one book in Coptic language attributed to Peter claims the person on the cross was not Jesus. That looks like Quranic version of crucifixion.

Great interview and great page. Jacob a couple weeks ago I heard u mention some of your personal thoughts on some of these topics. It seems this platform is for your guest to speak but maybe one day you could share more of your thoughts. You get to soak in so much knowledge from these scholars and maybe have put some ideas together that could be interesting to hear.

But, can't a book, like a Gospel, be a forgery in a sense, if it reports events etc that did not necessarily occur, and knew this, and publishes the information anonymously? For example, if a follower of one of the disciples publishes a book about Peter's experiences, but does not claim that Peter wrote it, and some or all of the information contained therein is false, then what would that be considered? Fiction? Or a purposeful account to try to convince that the readers of the truth of a book. When it is not. Not quite the same as a "forgery". But certainly shades of that. And just because we do not know the actual authors of the four gospels today, that does not mean they were anonymous during the time they were being distributed and read. And if ANYONE at any time did know who the authors were, then they can be forgeries I think. We have only lost the names of who forged them, not that they were not forgeries. Certainly, the gospels could have been written anonymously, but why? The veracity and strength of the information/stories they contain would be much enhanced if they can be associated with actual person(s) who experienced it all. And unless human nature has changed, people in the early centuries, just like today, want to know who did what and saw what and if they actually experienced things. Not just being told second or third hand about things. I do think that given the discrepancies between the gospels, 2nd and 3rd hand accounts were involved. Whether with all of them is debatable. From my view, the group or indivudual who benefits most from the gospels is Paul. Written after his time. They support his views more than any other. And it is to his early followers, maybe in Greece, are the ones to whom we should look to who may have written Matthew, Luke, John and Acts. Maybe even Mark as well. Paul controlling the narrative about his views on Jesus. And to counter any views by James and the other disciples of Jesus.

It is illuminating and makes you find more ways to reach the destination of a place where we are calling to be: the Spirit of Truth and Love that the world so much-needed. Any church could tell you anything ... Most of them. are missing the point leading you, essentially, never been called to. It's up to us to discern what was then, how it happened, etc... Bottom line is to learn. Mr Bart, I thank you for all that I learn so far. Btw, when Jesus gave the parable about the Good Samaritan...( Oh yes, he was not a jew, nor John's fallower, even worst, Samaritans were considered an abomination)...so, those like him are those who will enherit the eternal life. That's the calling.

You know this is real wrong and the reason im commenting on this channel is because i go to telk you people not to be mislead . I was demonically oppressed people and nothing came to my rescue but God Most High Jesus Christ ! This is my testimony before The Living God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob this happened to me and i tell you Jesus is The Only Way into Holy Heaven, aint no other way . May God bless you all and may He find you so you dont end up paying the price for being mislead .

There are too many forgeries in the new testament to call it a new testament and therefore is reflected in the confusing religion which clearly follows paul not jesus.

Quick note, in the EOTC they believe Pontius Pilate became a christian and he is venerated as a Saint by them.
