How do allergies work? (Allergen Lore)

Cats are cool but I can't get too close to them - it's pretty dumb that being near a specific animal can make my immune system get triggered.

You are missing one of the most common latex products...ahem, gloves for a single finger.

Latex is in so much more than gloves. Tires, shoes, spandex (in a lot of clothes), paint, sometimes steering wheels. It can get really annoying when you touch a thing then your skin punishes you for 3-6 weeks.

The latex logo in the tierlist is brilliant. I had to do a double take

Mr. ThatChemist,
I have been working as a Med Chemist for 6years now and I liked to make amides with HATU. I would use up to 100grams at a time. Last year, I finally identified HATU as HATCHU because I am severely allergic to it now. After my last episode, my boss made me find a full face respirator, and now I make amides looking like a HazMat tech.
😊

Thanks for mentioning Bhopal. That was one of the worst, if not the worst industrial fatality events that has ever occurred. Entirely preventable too.

Getting a Claritin add on this video is CRAZY

The visual explaining and highlighting is S-tier level education. I can feel my brain growing.

shoulda talked about mcas where your body is just allergic to living and put it right into S tier since it’s not very predictable

I have nut allergies and I get kinda paranoid whenever a stranger offers me a snack because I don't know if it contains nuts or not and I don't wanna find out the hard way. Not helping matters is that there have been incidents in the past where nut-free products have triggered reactions in people because nuts got into said products due to factory errors.

I'm literally allergic to exercise lol. It's one of several allergic conditions but likely is something called cholinergic urticaria. Basically if I get hot, usually from exercise but heat from something like warm air or a shower will set it off too, then I start getting covered in what feels like thousands of tiny painful needles, like if itchy was sharp. Then if it keeps going I'll get thousands of little red spots sometimes with white rings around them. And all in all it comes on in maybe 10 minutes at most, is bad for at most ten to twenty minutes, and then by the end of 45 minutes total at the absolute most I'm all better. It's horrible.

I live in Oregon, in the valley where 90% of *_all_* of the grass seed production for the entire world is. Down wind. We regularly have the highest pollen count in the entire world here, for like two months straight.

Never mind an allergy to the air, I have an allergy to the sun, I'm just that speshul, "Solar Urticaria" they call it, though for me it's relatively mild and is just a really itchy AF rash when I forget to pop some allergy pills (preferably the ones that don't cause sleepytimes), appearing mostly on my arms, hands, face and neck, I usually stay covered up elsewhere cos I'm so pale-skinned I'd cause people snow-blindness I'm sure... :P

By immune system considers nuts and peanuts an existential threat that requires a scorched earth policy to defeat.

As someone with a severe allergy to dustmites. I cant go anywhere with carpet. Have to wash everything constantly even if not worn. Worst case my face blows up. My mouth swells and i can have anaphylaxis. Best case. Sneezing, weepy eyes and contact dermatitis which forms everywhere. Its way more than D tier if you have a sever allergy to it. I have to live my life on almost constant steroids. Cant go to most peoples houses. The contact dermatitis is like blisters. Extremely painful. Not to mention the fact ive had injections done 3 different times only to make it worse each time. For a mild sufferer it might be mild but for the extreme it controls my entire life. If i dont keep on top of it i end up in hospital.

I've subscribed and I liked this video. It was rather than a chemistry tierlist, an education based tierlist as well. THE ONLY PROBLEM : You did not use both B tier and F tier. Rendering those two tiers as useless. That's extremely irritating, that can go into S tier

Finding out OAS is a thing was so eye opening. Explains so much. Also I’ve never seen that list before, but it’s so accurate, legit ticked off all of the stuff that irritates me. Damn you pollen.

Of course I already understand the risks involved with the chemicals I work with but it's quite surprising seeing 3 compounds I often use in the lab mentioned here.
Isocyanates really suck when they are volatile, being near any amount of phenylisocyanate outside of a fume hood will instantly make my eyes and nose hurt and makes me cry but at least it has a really sweet smell. In contrast, nitrophenylisocyanate (a solid) has never caused me any harm.
Ninhydrin being mentioned surprised me since I've had tiny spills on my hands several times and I only got purple stains (RIP my skin proteins lmao).
And I just used DCC for the first time yesterday but I was super carefull with it because everyone makes a big deal of it being very toxic.

Hell yeah, always love a new video. Dry humor, epic memes and dope chemistry, you can’t get better than that.
