#3 ~Russ's Home Brewed Filament Extruder: The Break Down V1

Although The basic principal of the extruder is not m idea, this build was engineered in my head as I constructing it... It's all custom to this extruder...

The first person and the credit should go to this guy:

the Smart scarecrow show that i was talking about is here :

and there will be more on this project soon...

Info on my prienter I will be using the filament for:

What a beautiful machine, the best D.I.Y extruder I've found so far. The only thing I would change is the screw. A custom one should be more efficient I guess, you could make run faster for other types of applications like filling a mold. One of the pros of your choose is that it is easily replaceable, whereas a custom one is not

I must say, all your engineering is always extremely neatly and well done!

Total agree with daniels comment, 70 percent of ur heat comes from sheer/friction, that way you maintain a stable melt.theres a few different extrusion screws to chose from you should research the best for this application

An excellent build. Like to see some one using industrial grade components for builds. There is a reason they cost Xx what an Arduino controller is they are engineered and built to be robust in industrial environments they also have repeatability and accuracies that are better then project type sensors..
If your going to control the process for stand alone you should add a few loops.
1 a rotational sensor on the screw to measure feed rate. this could be used as a pre step tohavethe tube partially filled(loaded) before turning on the preheat resistor.
Once it is loaded to a % of space the resistor turns on and the screw turns off for a time delay.or a temperature control like the center temp controller.
2 Once preheat is established the screw is turned on and then after a few turns the final heater is enabled.

Now you need extrusion control either speed adjustment or temperature regulation in the final stage.

You are working in a garage so the ambient temp will change with the time of day and month of the year so controls for extrusion are needed to maintain a quality product.

I recently moved and needed to leave my scrap parts supply back at the mainland

Good time of day ! Please tell me what power should have a resistor as the heating element is high ? and if does not complicate his label and specify the thickness of the wall .

The black plastic looks like Polyoxymethylene. (delrin) Works great with heat. This might not be correct but thats what I think it is.

Go to a boiler service company and ask about some fabulous stuff called "Fiberfrax".  The insulating properties are terrific.  I have it on the exhaust for my welder so I dont burn the garage down when running the generator.  Otherwise to hold insulation in place instead of using tape.  Try using mechanics wire.

The best heat exchange is for total contact between heating and heated surface. Any air gap between the two will act like an insulator and drive up electrical consumption.

Hey Ross, ain't it better to use an extrusion screw than a drill bit? With a screw, the heating is just to keep a stable temperature but the plastic melts from the pressure. How does the heat affect the quality of the plastic VS pressure melt?
Thank you very much for sharing your exploits, you got the Open Culture ;)

"It's about 4:00am in the morning"? You keep hours like me. I've been keeping up with all of your videos on this project including your last video # 9 I think. Nice
work man.

Отличная работа, плохо не знать язык но по жестам и обзору можно всё понять. Буду пробовать собирать для своих нужд.

Excellent video! Do you have any suggestion to stable filament diameter?

i notice that you have inverted the game between the screw and the tube, normally the extruders have a big game at the beginning and at the end is really tight, this will give you a more consistent pressure at the end and may ended up with a better tolerance. also, having a tight tolerance at the end wont allow the air to escape.

Can you write whole metarials you used to make the Filament extruder? (Like which site did you buy them and their measurement)

russ mate why are u using two heater elements the long one and the one at the tip? is there a reason for it
