Do Beta Blockers Provide Any Relief From Anxiety Related Heart Symptoms - #07 Anxiety United QE

I've been on Propranolol (Beta Blocker) for anxiety for a number of years and todays question asks whether or not I've noticed any real significant changes in heart related anxiety symptoms.

Todays question: Do you get any relief from fast heartbeats, palpitations or skipped beats when using beta blockers for anxiety?

PLEASE DO NOT STOP USING ANY MEDICATION UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY YOUR DOCTOR

If anyone has any questions they'd like me to discuss on future episode of Anxiety United Questions Everything (AUQE), then please comment below or get in touch via our other social media channels.

"If you die you die" - that is the question. Most people who are anxious fear dying. Death is the underlying fear that fuels anxiety almost all the time even if it's a subconscious and unknown driver. I've felt so bad at times in my life that I've become agoraphobic from time to time and even with insight and a lot of training, the horrendous effects of anxiety are often just too hard to overcome. So it charges and informs our behaviour and our world's get smaller. Reluctance to go in a lift, reluctance to fly anywhere, not wanting to meet new people etc. And yet, we will all die; that's 100% guaranteed. So I've just come to the verdict that I might as well just go for things, dizzy or not, and really plunge into it, and if I die, I die... so fuckin what. The alternative is to live a life in the shadows, on your knees. And then it's over real quick. Most of us will die before we're 100, so whether we go for things or not will decide on whether we live NOW or not. I KNOW, and I really DO KNOW how difficult this is, and I'm currently in what AA would call the contemplation stage. That's when alcoholics decide they're going to give up drinking but they're not sure when. That's like me and probably a lot of other anxious people. I've decided to live but I'm not sure when. To be or not to be. To live or not to live. It'll be gone all too soon!

It's funny that you say you never noticed your heart rate before. I don't think I've ever met anyone with anxiety who didn't have the dreaded palpitations and heart fears. I just had a panic attack a couple days ago and my heart rate was 168. It was terrifying! I'm on a low dose of propranolol, but it probably needs to be adjusted. Anyone else get the super high heart rate?

I take propranolol 3 times a day, I suffer with palpitations, and other anxiety symptoms, and the medication works for me, it doesn't stop them completely, but if I miss a dose I definitely notice an increase in palpitations.

This is an interesting question because I’ve wondered this same thing …….I was put on propranolol years ago when I had hyperthyroidism and it helped with the anxiety and fast heart rate then and years later which is now, I mentioned being back on propranolol for my current anxiety due to overthinking, worrying, and fast heart rate and I was just wondering was it actually helping me and the answer is yes and no …….I think it’s helping with the fast heart rate and I’m on 60 ml by the way, but as far as the worrying and overthinking, I don’t think so but I also wonder if there is long-term damage that can be done to the heart by taking propranolol …..a doctor mentioned that to me once but thank you so much for bringing attention to this subject

They can help my panic attacks shorten but other than that they don't prevent them or actually help me do things that give me anxiety.

I take them 3 tiem or miss them in case of heart attackemmes a day but sometimes it triggers palpitations as soon as it hits my stomachs but if bad palpitations I sick one under my tongue until it melts does the trick sometimes after about 20 minutes but I'm scared to stop them in case of heart attack

I take 10mg propranalol 3 times a day, it doesn't stop my palpitations at all.
I also wish I'd never got on so many drugs for my Anxiety and Depression, but like you I'm scared of the withdrawal process too. Scary thought huh? X
