As our lives become increasingly technocentric, unexpected power outages are more inconvenient than ever. Not only do we lose access to modern conveniences like TV and internet; outages of essential equipment such as security systems, lighting, and refrigerators, can lead to unsafe environments.

The havoc wreaked by high winds, thunderstorms, and even grid maintenance can impact home and business owners for days, with few options other than to wait for the power to turn back on.
Fortunately, we live in the 21st century where you can power your home during these unexpected outages, and there are two readily available solutions to keep you out of the dark: a solar system with battery backup or a home generator.

In this week’s video we’ll assess your options for home backup solutions and the main differences between generators specifically portable generators and solar plus battery backup systems specifically small essential battery backup systems.

I’ll discuss overall cost, reliability, environmental impact, power outputs, and smart technology integration.

Can I get away with an Enphase 10 and an Enphase 3 along with solar to run my 3.5 ton AC?

I currently own a Sunny Boy SB 40 with 44 solar panels. I am considering adding a battery backup to my system. How many batteries would I need and approximately how much is the cost for the batteries and installation? $14, 000?

What do you think the odds are of that Enphase partnered Fuel Cell (NXG from UpStart) actually being released this year as stated in the last investor call? Would they be stackable, meaning could home owners install 2 for more production?

Seems like the low maintenance, high efficiency, reduced footprint, wall mounting, reduced emissions, etc., do away all the worst things about a traditional generator while retaining all the positives. Only production seems to be a possible concern.

When taking in to consideration the pollutants, it really depends on how long and how many power outages you have. If it's only a couple hours a year I don't see how the mining of the materials for the battery could ever be less than the gas. But if you have frequent power outages for long periods of time battery is the only way to go.

I’m in South Africa 🇿🇦 and fuel ⛽️ prices have insanely gone up… there’s no way I would even consider a generator. Plus the noise also, I know they’ve improved them but they still make lots of noise. A 16kW Solar with 20/40kWh battery and a 15/16kW hybrid inverter would do me well.

Portable generators get stolen with such frequency (when you need them most) that the place where I purchased mine from records the serial number so that when it gets stolen you can call and get it from them for the police report. Factor that into your budget.
