Hadrian’s Wall National Trail: the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire with John & Beth Sundberg
Many in this country do not realize that the Romans occupied most of Britain for nearly 400 years. The movie King Arthur (2004) had scenes depicting the Roman occupation and Hadrian’s Wall. In AD122 (1,899 years ago) Emperor Hadrian came to Britain and ordered a stone and earth wall be built across the land between the seas near the modern border with Scotland. Hadrian’s Wall, some of which still stands, was actively used, maintained, and defended for almost 300 years! The only reason it is not still standing in its original form is because after the Romans left some stones were removed to build houses and churches. The wall was 117 km/73 modern miles/80 Roman miles long, with 3 large stone bridges, 16 forts, 80 milecastles, and 160 turrets. The remnants of Hadrian’s Wall through the English countryside has become a National Trial. John and Beth Sundberg describe their 5-day hike along the wall in a Southwest Harbor Public Library Zoom meeting.
