Imagine being a steam locomotive engineer in 2023. Big flex

Hopefully the UP puts 844 on more excursions cause she hasn't been used since 2019.

At 90 mph, Doc and Marty would be thrilled...

Steam locomotives just have a special soul to them. Not many machines have that characteristic where they almost feel like they're alive. It's a shame we don't really use them anymore...

Sadly when she was rebuilt parts of her sister were used and sadly her sister doesn’t run anymore and has been left in storage to rot

My grandfather was an engineer for up and got to drive the 844 while it was in freight service. This is my favorite locomotive and has a special place in my heart

Sierra #3 sat for a few years but built in 1890’s still runs today. The movie star train used in many tv shows and movies, known as The Canon Ball in a show called Petty Coat Junction, was also used in Back to the Future lll and many other shows.

Germany also has some steam locomotives which were never retired: The nicknamed "Molli" Bahn (=rail), or officially "Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn" in north eastern Germany. Albeit, those locomotives are a lot smaller and slower, and narrow gauge ;). And some years ago, there was even a new steam locomotive for this line made from scratch!

Actually 844 isn't the only steam locomotive to never retire not even just in America Roaring Camp No.2 Tuolumne built for Hetch-Hetchy & Yosemite Valley in 1900 to 1925 when it went to Pickering Lumber to west side in 1934 back to Pickering in 1958 and then to Roaring Camp in 1963 and it is still in operation

Now if they can put back on the Mars light, that’ll be great.

I rode behind it when it was 8444. A fine vehicle, indeed.

She’s the locomotive seen in the opening of Shining Time Station, for those who remember.

It’s beautiful. I’m so glad it was preserved. That piece of history shows so many what the age of steam was like. Locomotives like it are what brought my lifelong passion for rail to life.
Thank you for featuring this story, Benny.

The 844 is in the shop, after the 4014 put back into service, soon after restoration, to be re-serviced . The 844 will be back soon.

loop rating: actually original and fits the subject, doesn't flow that well but it does make a sentence, 8/10
