China snubs Canada in lifting of travel bans

Beijing lifted bans on mainland Chinese group travel to 78 countries on August 10, 2023. The list includes the US, Japan, and Australia, but not Canada. The Chinese embassy in Ottawa said the apparent snub was due to Canada’s “hyping up” of “Chinese interference” claims. Tensions between the two countries have been rising since 2018, with a series of tit-for-tat arrests and recent allegations of Chinese meddling in Canadian elections.
