"Be ashamed to die until you've accomplished some victory for humanity." Love it.

I mostly remember Larry from this clip. Three years ago, I had severe death anxiety and I was searching for videos on YouTube that can help me. In this interview, Larry expressed in few words everything I was feeling then and it really helped.
His death hits different for me.
R.I.P Larry

I do not fear death. I fear non-existence. To not exist means I will never see the future of humanity, never know if we can find a way to go faster then light, never know the answers to millions of questions I have. That is what is going to happen when I die and that is why we have religion and the ever-after. Religion gives us the hope of seeing and learning after we die. Unfortunately, you only have this one short life to make a positive or negative contribution to humanity.

Started having death anxiety accentuated after my dad died. He was the most brilliant person I know. It’s so creepy to me how such a beautiful consciousness can just vanish from existence.
It’s nice to be religious and it’s nice to wrap pretty words around your fears like “I love the unknown” or “do your best for humanity.”
But at the end of the day I’m making the same choice as Larry, and living forever. This version of me will never exist again for the rest of the universe’s vast, vast existence. I take up less that .01 percent of its time.
It’s honestly such a cruel experience to be a conscious person. The Buddhists say that living is suffering. I used to think that was just super edgy talk, but it is true.

It's easy to not fear death, until you face it.

That’s so deep because it’s the truth. Death is the bouquet of life, and it’s a collection of a story and stories and paths we went down. It’s the end to a story. And knowing that the party won’t last forever makes it so you can see how much there is to do and how much time you really have is limited.

Wow, I love Tyson's other quote too about whether or not heaven exists. He only replies with, "Doesn't matter." He doesn't have the inclination to completely refute or accept the existence of God--he's too busy living life. He's one of the greatest agnostics I've heard.

I remembered this interview the second that I heard that he had died.

It’s is the knowledge that I am going to die that creates the focus of me being alive

I'm completely the opposite. I figure since I am going to die anyways, what's the point of all accomplishments, success, wealth, etc. It's all going to be taken away in a flash as though I never acquired it in the first place.

Sure, if I leave something behind that's going to benefit society, well that's great and all, but will it really matter to me when I'm gone??

Suppose I won't even remember anything from this life. It would be like it didn't happen. It would be as if I weren't even there.
